[history]
On Sunday night Assembly Republicans, the chamber's minority party, got to present their tax-lite vision of California's future. It's a debt-laden budget that would cut college, kindergarten, kibble for guide dogs to the blind and health care for kids. Their proposal won just 27 votes in the 80-member Assembly. Even five Republicans couldn't bring themselves to vote Yes.

Legislative Republicans have argued that California, which cut taxes deeply during the flush days of the stock market boom . . . When was the last time this state cut taxes? Pete Wilson raised taxes when he was governor and I know damn well that Gray Davis hasn't cut taxes. What in the world is the Sacramento Bee talking about? Are they talking about taxes being cut when Deukmejian was governor?
To: NormsRevenge
BARF ALERT! There's no such thing as a "temporary" tax increase. We've already seen the car tax tripled. Yeah and while the Bee is whining about how mean the Republican budget is in cutting spending, California burns. Apparently their liberal editors' idea of compassion is to confiscate by force more hard-working Californians' incomes to feed the maw of the ever hungry government beast. In this entire debate no one bothers to ask if the government can do with less. Liberals always assume its the public that must make do on much less since to their minds, government knows best. And the Bee's editorial is the perfect distillation of this liberal attitude that's led California right into financial quicksand.

The former President disembarks from his airplane after a trip back to Arkansas. Although the hoopla is less now that he is out of office, Clinton still occasionally finds himself greeted by military personnel. This is one such occasion. He climbs down the stairs, carrying two huge pigs, one under each arm. He gets to the bottom, and nods his head in return to the soldier's salute. "Son, what do you think about these?" he says. "Nice pigs, SIR!" comes the reply. Clinton gets mildly miffed and lectures, "I'll have you know these aren't just pigs but the finest of Arkansas Razorbacks. Top notch. I got one for Hillary, and one for Chelsea. What do you think about that?" "Nice trade, SIR! |

In economic terms, every cut in state spending is also a cut in someone's personal income This is the level of economic understanding at the Sac Bee? Why don't we double state spending? Seems like it would benefit oh-so-many people.
To: NormsRevenge
California isn't the only one suffering from budget problems, NY is billions of dollars in debt as well. But it's the same in both states, liberals in government who spend other people's money like candy. And now the chickens are finally coming home to roost.

"In economic terms, every cut in state spending is also a cut in someone's personal income; if a Highway Patrol officer gets laid off or a blind person gets a lower SSI grant, the state's economy is reduced by the size of the spending cut."
In economic terms. . .Where does the money come from that pays the CHP and the SSI? The funding comes from people who are "producers." That is to say, people who produce wealth. If, and until, wealth production is improved in the State, there simply will not be any way that a lot of State services can be funded. The state's economy is NOT reduced by the size of spending cuts, it is reduced by the shortfall in production of wealth.
Spending must be cut. Period.

But the right kind of tax increase, such as an increase in the top bracket of the income tax, does less short-run damage, since high earners tend to respond to higher taxes not by consuming less but by reducing savings.Nonsense. High earners will find ways of sheltering their income from higher taxes or will simply move their money out of state.

Exactly. This Bee article is just another iteration of the "Vote for the Dems' tax-hiking budget" chorus.

What the SacBee
really needs to advocate is a "Tax Me More Fund", where the good liberals voluntarily do their part to decrease the deficit.
After all, with the 'success' of this effort in Massachusetts ($10 grand tops?), California should reap an additional $25K in revenue!
I'm not a big fan of Rick Perry (TX governor), but at least our state legislature (Republican majority), closed a projected $10B deficit by keeping the lid on spending. For that, I do give credit to Gov. Perry for his leadership.

Ever heard them say the same thing about a tax increase? One that would affect 100's of times more people?

Yup. Rich liberal billionaires will simply pack their bags and move to a more tax friendly climate. Then what would the snotty liberal airheads at the Bee suggest California do then? By the time every tax is raised here every one who can leave will do so. What's really dumb about their editorial is driving the Titanic deeper into the iceberg. Yup, more taxes will keep California afloat! Its what passes for smart thinking in our state's newsrooms. And we have to read that kind of trash that appears in ink every day! California is in big trouble because it lacks people with the ability to do real world math. The liberals still refuse to face the reality of the fact our state is dead, flat broke.

Leaving those people with less income. I confess I'll never understand their logic. Why not confiscate 100% of what people earn? They'll get along somehow for California simply needs the money today.

We have a couple of Repubs that may be in need of some assistance in remembering what party they were elected reps from.

We have a couple of Repubs that may be in need of some assistance in remembering what party they were elected reps from. They wouldn't dare! Do you know what happened to Senator "Moe Joe"? Not to mention Mike Briggs. By the way, Briggs was misunderstood; his heart was in the right place. Point is, though, I don't think even one Republican will fold. Too high a price to pay.
