Iranian Alert -- DAY 30 -- LIVE THREAD PING LIST [Riots erupt]

Today is July 9th. The day Iranians have been waiting for. The next 24-72 hours may be the most important in Iran's history.
It is noon there, at the time of this post, and already we are hearing of people in the streets. The regime's security forces are out in force. This is very encouraging as most of the demonstrations thus far have been at night to take advantage of the cover of dark.
We have heard of riots in the Pars region of the city of Tehran. We have yet to hear of strikes. We are receiving phone calls from Iran but they are few. The regime is cutting off the calls to the United States as soon as they find them.
We are continuing to hear of the regimes jamming of the broadcasts in much of Iran and Europe. But apparently the signals do get through from time to time.
The people of Iran have chosen July 4th because four years ago, the regime brutally attacked peaceful student demonstrators while in their dorms. The result was the loss of life and liberty of hundreds of students, many of which are still unaccounted for.
Iran is a country ready for a regime change. If you follow this thread you will witness, I believe, the transformation of a country. This daily thread provides a central place where those interested in the events in Iran can find the best news and commentary.
Please continue to post your news stories and comments to this thread.
Thanks for all the help.

mailto:letters@freepress.com The interesting thing to note about today's letter section in the Detroit Free Press, is that south-eastern Michigan has a large Arab-American population, and you would think that July 9, 2003, would end up being a big blip on the radar, and that someone would have mentioned it. Perhaps they did, and no one at the paper wished to print it, because they think the public isn't interested. Perhaps the reason the public isn't interested, because the news isn't reporting it. The people need to be educated, before they can respond!

Hi Doc, thanks for doing such a great job.
I have now very reliable reports of big, and very bloody, clashes in five different neighborhoods in Tehran. And last night there were demonstrations in Mashad, with the people (bless them) wearing t-shirts with American flags on the front. And of course the demonstrations in Isfahan never really stopped, it's now normal. So we can already say that the regime's intimidation was not successful. And you have to admire the courage of these young Iranians...it will be a fascinating country once it's free again.

Fardis neighborhood near Tehran. One of fundamentalist vigilant was beaten and dismantled from his weapons by people .....Good! They've learned that there are more people than vigilantes. They just need to stick together and overpower them. TIE THEM TO THE TREES!

More than 10.000 protesters are in front of University.... Khashayar... have you seen these 10,000 protesters?

I know there are lots of Iranians in Houston. I know many in Texas, but Houston was where most of them were (so it seemed).

Radio Farda (official US radio/tv) just announced 10,000 demonstrators fighting with "police" in Azadi Square.

Thanks for you great work, Mr. Ledeen.
I know, but it would be nice to get an on-the-ground confirmation or video footage of this. I travel and work inside of Cuba and know that Radio Marti has lost some credibility down there (I was last there in early April) because, out of very good intentions, they exaggerate numbers of protests at time. And I don't believe it's done intentionally, but things can get innocently distorted from over-optimism sometimes. Nevertheless, I am praying these numbers are true and growing.

GREAT! Hopefully those 3 students "kidnapped" this morning will find out their sacrifices weren't in vain.
To: TexanToTheCore
Really? I'll have to find them. We are still a little new here, discovering our new city.
I had some Iranian friends who had businesses in Dallas. I would go with them down to Houston on business trips. We would eat at this Persian restaurant there because Dallas didn't have one. Best food I ever ate.
