IN AN OLD gangster movie, actor Edward G. Robinson had a great line, "You can dish it out, but you can't take it," which applies perfectly to the European left. They come along and hit you on the side of the head, and if you raise a fist in response, they cry, "Foul, foul, foul!"
Thus it was that a German Socialist, Martin Schulz, was wounded oh, so deeply when Silvio Berlusconi answered in kind to Schulz's slam during a session of the European Parliament.
Berlusconi is the conservative prime minister of Italy and a very rich, outspoken man who has supported the United States in its war on terrorism.
Through a system of rotation, Berlusconi is also president of the European Union for six months. Last week after Berlusconi gave a speech, Schulz, a member of the European Parliament, challenged Berlusconi's fitness for the job, specifically mentioning that Berlusconi is being pursued by left-leaning Italian judges on old corruption charges.
Berlusconi told Schulz he knew of a movie being made about a Nazi concentration camp and said he would happily recommend Schulz for the role of a guard. Schulz made it known he was horrified. No doubt other leftist legislators were, too, including those holding up signs saying, "No Godfather for Europe."
German leaders demanded an apology, and finally got it. Meanwhile, the feisty Berlusconi might want to take in that old gangster movie, "Little Caesar." The next time he defends himself against the left and they wail and moan, he can say, "Yeah, yeah, you can dish it out, but when I dish it out, you sure can't take it."
