[history]
In a state known as fertile ground for the surreal, it seems only fitting that California's next governor could be a former bodybuilder, ``Dating Game'' contestant and Hollywood actor who wore a leather loincloth in his breakthrough role.
But if all the stars line up, the Terminator is ready to storm California's sedate capital and transform it into an unparalleled political spectacle befitting a state that brought the world Electric Kool-Aid Acid Tests, Burning Man and the American Taliban.

However, most politicians are actors to begin with. Example, look at Clinton turning tears on and off at will, "feeling our pain." Office holders are so bad; why not have a real actor?

I already posted this elsewhere, but it bears repeating here:
Arnold will not be any sort of change for California as far as social issues. He is a strong anti-gun force, he is pro-choice and liberal on other social issues. His conservative streak appears in his fiscal policies. In that respect, he may be just what the doctor ordered for the state! There is no doubt he is a superb businessman and knows how to put the state back in the budgetary "black."
However, I'm afraid that this Austrian "cure" is going to propose budgetary reforms that are simply going to be too painful for residents of that state. Additionally, I fear that if the Dems maintain their stranglehold on the state legislature, all you'll get out of a recall and subsequent new election is more gridlock.
One thing is for sure, don't count on him to play the "Terminator" role in real life. The man is a RINO.

"Shriver -- who is the late President John F. Kennedy's niece -- has reason to be wary of the spotlight."
Well, she may have reason to be wary, but her job is a TV newsperson, and she married a movie super-star, that's not exactly what I'd call shunning the spotlight. Maybe the author should have said POLITICAL spotlight.
Arnold needs to convince other republicans to back him, and stay off the ballot. Still, I'm not sure he's the right man for the job, that state is in a shambles, not sure it's a task for a newbie. Then again, might be the best thing.
It'll be very interesting to see how this plays out. I only wonder why Ralph Nadar hasn't jumped on board. This is really a game that anyone (except probably Gray Davis) can win. I wouldn't rule out Davis 100% even. I'd think Nadar would have a good chance on a crowded ballot, but instead he is talking about running for President again, I guess his true plan involves not EVER getting a REAL job, just a lot of publicity.

Here's a frightening thought: will Moon Man Brown, mayor of Oakland, that truly far-left enclave in far-left Kalipornia, run again and could he win? Next to Davis, Brown was one of the State's worst govs.

"... most recently, spearheaded a successful ballot measure meant to create more after-school programs. Those moves, especially last year's Proposition 49 campaign run by Gorton, were widely viewed as laying the foundation for a run for office. During the initiative battle, Schwarzenegger built a broad, bipartisan coalition to support Proposition 49 and won over many skeptics."
Proposition 49 was the brain-child of dimwits such a Rob Reiner, and Schwarzenegger signed on to it. Proposition 49 was a shining example of the lunacy prevalent in the liberal left. This should speak volumes to potential voters... Schwarzenegger is not a conservative, and a RINO at best!
"Schwarzenegger has described himself as a fiscal conservative and social moderate who supports abortion rights and ``sensible gun control.'' While his positions on most issues aren't well-established, that basic set of views has provided the winning approach for the last Republicans who have held the state's top office."
Schwarzenegger is a Kennedy. This is a winning approach for Republicans? Who would be stupid enough to buy into that dribble.
What is
"sensible gun control"? This is an oxymoron perpetrated by this nincompoop to appeal to his core supporters... the liberal left! What Kalifornia doesn't need is more gun control. Crap... we have enough already!
The facts, as they exist, about Schwarzenegger:
- Schwarzenegger sleeps with a Kennedy.
- Schwarzenegger dines with the Kennedys, including Teddy.
- Schwarzenegger socializes with the Kennedys, including Teddy.
- Schwarzenegger is a Kennedy.
"If Schwarzenegger -- and his wife -- can weather the scrutiny, the actor could shake up California's political establishment."
The Peoples Republik of Kalifornia needs someone to provide leadership, not a Kennedy lackey who is nothing more than a mouth-piece for Ted Kennedy's political agenda. Shake up Kalifornia's political establishment indeed! More like send this state further into the abyss.
Tom McClintock is the only person who offers a glimmer of hope to the problems we are facing in this state.

Beyond this RINO stuff (we can't have everything), with him at the capital it will allow non-RINOs to make headway in a heavily leaning DEM state. A Repub Gov will support policies to strengthen the GOP party in the state and provide valuable help during next year's election. It is a chance to make inroads that would be impossible without a him being there. So, the glass is half-full.

"could [Jerry Brown] win?
He'd have a shot, I'd think. In a race like this I think Name Recognition is going to be more important than ever. I kinda like Brown, even the nut-lefty that he is. I'm not sure HE'S the man for the job now either.
I never lived in California, so I'll take your word for it that he was a poor govenor. All you ever hear, way over hear on the East Coast is 1. How California leads the nation and 2. How California is falling apart. These two things in tandem are NOT very encouraging!

Cox would better than Schwarzenegger because he's far more conservative. What I'm not sure of is whether he could win.

Arnie is crazy if he runs and is elected. He can not win!! He';; still have the dems running the legislature. With Arnie as governor, the weasel dems will not change but will have someone to blame. The unions own the dems and they are not going to give up a single state job.
Recall makes ni sense. It just gives the dems an easy excuse. Fortunately, Davis will not be recalled because the petitions will be deemed inadequate by the California Supreme Court whic Davis owns and which still has a red streak from when Justice Byrd was on it.

I think the independent voters(who have had a belly full of taxes) would vote for Chris Cox in a heartbeat. And we all know that the independent voters, which account for practically twenty percent of the electorate, are the deciding factors in CA. Cox is intelligent, conservative, experienced, sharp as a razor and absolutely no baggage.

Additionally, I fear that if the Dems maintain their stranglehold on the state legislature, all you'll get out of a recall and subsequent new election is more gridlock. "That government is best which governs least"
Gridlock is good for the state, and good for the government.
I always evaluate the political situation and vote for the candidate who I think will do the least. Actually, if I can find one who I think can really gum up the workings of government, that is my candidate.
What is Arnold's real position on gun control? He says "sensible gun control". The laws we already have are way beyond sensible. If he wants more, then I am against him, but if he thinks we are already beyond "sensible" then he is an electable choice.
