Actually, it's quite the opposite. The Arabs, beginning with the secularists, exploited the Cold War for their own benefit; they were hardly pawns, but played the Communist Bloc off the Western Bloc for their own ends.

The Islamists, by their actions, have encouraged the former Communist countries to find common cause with the West over the plague wreaked by the Isalmists everywhere they pop up. They have vastly overplayed their hand. The Russians have become chauvinists and are returning to their Orthodox roots.
