What is almost too much to bear is the thought that Justice O'Conner, who should be impeached for moral turpitude on the basis of that Texas sodomy ruling, might instead be nominated by the President, Mr. Bush, to be Chief Justice.
Note that the people who celebrated her got the worst of it, for people who make bad decisions are nowhere near as rotten as the people who applaud them for doing so.

"What is almost too much to bear is the thought that Justice O'Conner ... might instead be nominated by the President, Mr. Bush, to be Chief Justice." If this happens, many Bush supporters will drop the President like a bad habit. These conservative Republicans will simply stay home in Nov. '04.

I wonder how establishment conservatives will justify a Bush appointment of O'Connor as chief justice. Will they just say it is "temporary" and part of an "overall" plan to make the court conservative? And who would believe such "reasoning"? Maybe, Orrin G. Hatch, for starters.

A speculation or wild guess, or have you read something about it?

I'll say it; mabe it was an act of God!

That is some speculation......but not mentioned much and without solid evidence.
It won't happen.
If it does, I would likely withdraw my support for Dubya in 2004.....it would be that big of a deal because I will NOT compromise on the SCOTUS. I could care less what happens elsewhere when it comes to voting based on his other actions as long as he gives us some good SCOTUS nominees.

... might instead be nominated by the President, Mr. Bush, to be Chief Justice. Did Rhenquist retire or resign? Did I miss something?
I will say this, I do not support O'Connors ruling in this and a few other cases, but I do support her in many others. And if Rhenquist retires before O'Connor and if Bush is President and if he appoints O'Connor to be Chief Justice and if she is confirmed, it would in NO way change my support for President Bush. Any more than it has changed my opinion for Ronald Reagan who is responsible for her being on the court to begin with. I love, admire, respect, and support Reagan now as much as I ever did. And I do Bush as well.
