You didn't read the whole paragraph:
For security reasons Simon & Schuster has never posted her appearances on its website.
Nobody knows she's there. So those who are showing up to buy her book, uhhh...could they be there by special invitation and media photo-op [not real buyers; just the appearance of real buyers]?

There are signs in the book stores and closer to the date, they arrange an interview so that a story runs in the local paper.
Sometimes there's not even an interview, the papers just run a story she's coming.
