I haven't seen either of them outside of a Lucas film so I can't say. I do know that Lucas is pretty famous for not giving actors any kind of useful direction to help them find the tone and emotion of the character. He's a camera director not an acting director. The joke on the set of the first movie was that he only gave actors two instructions: faster, louder.

I heard that he got into an argument with Liam Neeson because in the scene where Qui-Gon is taking away Anakin, he puts his hand on Shmi to comfort her. Lucas didn't want him to put his hand on her, while Neeson said something like "He's about to take her son, away. Wouldn't he at least put his hand on her to comfort her?". Don't know if it's true or not, but if it is, it's damned nuts. I noticed, though, that my favorite Star Wars movies are the ones which he doesn't direct. For the third one, he really needs to hand the directing reigns over to someone else, and CO-write the script. Have someone else go over it and keep the clunky dialogue to a minimum.

That assumes that the characters have any tone or emotion to begin with - a contention with which I would take issue.

Hayden was nominated for a golden globe for Life As A House and was really good.

Natalie was exceptional in Beautiful Girls and Leon.
