Locksmith (Technical Operations Officer)

The Central Intelligence Agency is seeking Locksmiths to work with the best minds in the country while performing a mission critical to our nation.

Are you an energetic and enthusiastic technical professional who enjoys applying creative solutions to complex and often difficult technical and operational problems? We are looking for technical operations officers who are self-starters that can work independently, have technical skills, are highly mobile (domestic and overseas), and demonstrate strong initiative, writing/briefing skills, and interpersonal skills.

Locksmiths are applying in droves to work at the CIA after the agency posted a want ad on its Web site on June 19. Already, more than 180 locksmiths have applied, agency officials said.

"We have plenty of locksmiths to pick from," said Mark Mansfield, an agency spokesman. "We can only hire a small fraction, but the response has been beyond our expectations."

CIA officials won't say precisely what work they want them to do. Agency officials did acknowledge they haven't had a rash of people locking keys in their cars at the staff lot at the agency's Langley, Va., headquarters.

I wonder if the CIA has found Osama's and/or Saddam's secret vaults?

I hope no one here has a "cache" of weapons in their home.

I first read this article and thought of Jack-Booted Thugs being able to quietly break into citizen's homes.

Just thinking out loud here..

Looks like the "sneal and peek" portion of the PATRIOT Act is up and running...

"We have plenty of locksmiths to pick from,"

Those JBTs have such a way with words.

It’s odd. Most locksmiths aren’t safecrackers. With all the goofy Kaba-type locks, picking them is virtually out of the question. It’s usually easier/quicker to just drill them.

Even with relatively cheap safes it’s generally quicker to drill than to fart around trying to crack the combination. Unless it’s really a cheap fireproof document-type safe from a discount store or something.

Everybody I know would just show up with one of those drill press rigs that can be set up to drill in whatever position you want. Pack a lunch and a bunch of bits because you’re going to be there a while. Those little floor safes that gas stations used to use take just about 8 hours to get open that way. Something “good” like a bank vault would probably take the better part of a month.

I’m not saying that it can’t be done some other way, but I’d sure like to see it.

If they used a drill all the time, people would know thier locks had been tampered with.

Black bag jobs are the order of the day here.

The CIA generally does not do domestic surveillance. If it was the ATF or DEA (both a bunch of even bigger bozos than the FBI that just blew - conservatively - $250,000 investigating a turtle trap) I'd be worried.

I'm aware of that. However if we suspected a bunch of enemy agents roaming around inside the US...

Guess you're right, I was gonna suggest a burning-rod, they will make a hole in a bank vault door you can walk through in about 20 minutes. (so I have been told)

However if we suspected a bunch of enemy agents roaming around inside the US... It would fall under the auspices of the FBI, possibly with some military special investigations (i.e. AF's OSI) branch personell involved if the agents were attempting to penetrate a federal reservation or obtain intelligence from the military or it's contractors.

It would now. But the original premise behind the FBI was to investigate domestic, inter-state crimes. Not sniff out terrorists and spies. The Spy Games were left up to the NSA and the CIA.

Let's not give the Friendly Baby Incinerators any more excuse to polish thier boots than we need to.
