***Fox Movie Channel Cancels Charlie Chan to be Politically Correct***
stardate: 0306.30

Posted on 06/30/2003 5:52:20 PM PDT by The Wizard

In what has to be the most yellow streak of broadcasting in years, the Fox movie channel has canceled the colection of Charlie Chan films because they were afraid a few folks might not understand that Stephin Fetchit was a ROLE played by an actor....

It a gutless move that ranks up there with the other great politically correct moves that show America has turned into a liberal pond of weakkneed corporations under extortion by the likes of jesse jackass and al sharpy sharpton, the Fox movie channel restored the films to perfection, advertised them for weeks, and pulled them because some blacks might be offended by the actions of a single character....

What the hell is America coming too when you can't show a black without a college education.

then I suggest you don't watch......on a TV where I can watch men getting head, I think being worried about Charlie Chan is a little over the top

"Sarcasm understood. BUT, have you ever watched or listened to any original Amos 'n Andy material? "

Yes, the TV, not radio show. It is good quality stuff, and 100 times better than the junk on tv now.

This fox comment line is painful, justifying even showing charlie chan because of his intellect, etc.....

"the Charlie Chan films may contain situations or depictions that are sensitive to some viewers."

Apparently, it is even offensive to use the word offensive.

This fox piece is quite orwellian in doublespeak.

You're right. In fact, I was totally wrong about Willie Best - he wasn't in any of the Chan movies, apparently. He played the frightened chauffeur/valet in GHOST BREAKERS with Bob Hope.

"Sarcasm understood. BUT, have you ever watched or listened to any original Amos 'n Andy material? I collect it. Compare it with the filth that's currently on that warner brothers network.

You could respect and laugh _with_ A&A - compared to disregarding and laughing _at_ the braying, detestable fools you find on television today.

Makes me glad I'm of a Different Race.
"

After your post I went and acquired a DVD of 4 episodes and rewatched it, the first since since early adolescence for me, and realized there is nothing remotely racist about this show. The situational conflicts are identical to what was being put on the white shows in this time frame. I am baffled about what the big deal is. There are no elements here that aren't present in any variety of 50's comedy, and it is a heck of a lot more wholesome that the crud on what is TV today. Why are the thought police opposed to this show?

All this reminded me to go over and sign the petition for the re-release of "Song of the South", which Disney has not shown since 1986, I believe. One has to buy it in the U.K and have it converted from PAL format or find a used copy.

Ah hah! Not so! Just go to http://www.bannedfilms.com/ and you will be pleasantly surprised. :)

Thanks for the tip re: "Song of the South". A very interersting site. I discovered I have another banned item, a 78 record of "Two Black Crows" that came with a wind-up Victrola we got from a relative years ago. I'd better be alert for a Jesse Jackson posse which may descend at any moment and snatch it, it's that politically incorrect.

My kids thought it was hilarious when they were little, as did my husband when he was small. Guess somebody forgot to tell them all that they were supposed to think it was racist or demeaning to blacks.

Wow. a Two Black Crows 78? awesome. I've only heard parts of them - was/were there more than one 'episode'? (i.e. what's on the flip side?)

It's Parts I and II, circa 1927, I think. I found an excerpt from it here: (As memory serves, this is from the recording I have)http://www.megalink.net/~davids/music.html

I'll play the record soon and check it out, I have to find where I hid the crank to the Victrola back when my grandson was around 2 years old. I think my favorite show having this type of theme was Amos "N Andy, they are classic and I remember listening to them on the radio as a kid with absolutely NO feelings of superiority toward blacks, I thought they were warm, wonderful people and by no means dumb or lazy.

I feel sorry for the kids growing up today who will perhaps perceive many blacks as angry, bitter victims who can't think for themselves. What a shame.
