I'm not intending to flame Circuit City ..... but....
1) I was unaware that Circuit City employees work on commission.
2) My experiences at Circuit City have been negative at every shopping experience
3) The 'knowledge' at my local Circuit City's certainly does not compete with the 'knowledge' I have found at Best Buy. The guys at my local Best Buy know HDTV, and can tell the difference between 720p, 720i and 1040i.
4) The return policy at Ciruit City is 180 degrees opposed to Best Buy (in *MY* experience).
Bottom line, I don't like high pressure sales, from people who don't know the product they are selling, nor the features of comparable models. I don't like having to 'sell' the idea of a refund on a non-functional product. I shop at Best Buy, and have never had a non-positive experience.

A few months ago I was at my local CC shopping for a new DVD player and some computer hardware. The salesman quietly advised me to go to Best Buy (which I did).

I like shopping at Circuit City but like you, I detest the salespeople. They don't seem to have much knowledge on their products except knowing how to steer you to the product that puts the biggest commission in their pocket. When they saunter up to me, I tell them right off, politely, of course, that I am "all set." Usually when I go to Circuit City, I already know what I want, having researched the product on the Web beforehand.

I forgot to mention in my last reply that the biggest reason why Circuit City salespeople annoy me is that they are always pushing that "extended warranty" crap on you. Even for products with no moving parts that will 99% of the time run for 20 years before having a problem.
When I bring my purchase to a salesperson to check out, I tell them right away that I do not want the extended warranty. That usually shuts them up. Usually that is, there are some that will continue to try and sell it.
For electronic products such as stereo equipment and TVs, you just need the standard manufacturers warranty (which is free with the purchase of the product). If the equipment is defective, you will know in 90 days.

BestBuy bump. I agree. I used to go to CC, but after several experiences with "kids" (inexperienced idiotic young salespeople who were clueless about what they were selling) I said the heck with it. Best Buy and eBay get my electronics business now. Circuit City is enroute to bankruptcy and this story just illustrates why. Quality doesn't matter to them.

LOL I'm the opposite. I hate Best Buy, but got a super computer deal at circuit city. As for the main point in the article... How is it legal to fire people because you want to hire other workers for less money?

I feel your pain...
My wife and I have been in our local CC store twice, once to buy a high end laptop, and the next to buy a high end home theater system (seperate components, not pre-packaged) and both times we could not get any help, let alone acknowlegement that we were in the store.
The only time someone even said something was when we started to walk out after standing in there for at least 30 minutes each time!!

isn't circuit city owned by radio shack?
To: Hodar
After I had my bag grabbed from my hand by security to 'check my receipt', I promised I would never go to another CC EVER.

I shop at Best Buy, and have never had a non-positive experience. I've shopped at both, but right now Best Buy is closer and has More stuff I'm interested in. I took a DVD player back to Best Buy because it insisted on converting wide screen DVDs to full screen. The selection menu simply didn't work. The guy at the desk says he will have to test it. He searches around for a DVD, pulls out one in its original shrink wrap, opens it up and puts it in the Machine.
It's a full screen DVD.
