US troops arrest Iraqi mayor they appointed
American troops arrested the US appointed mayor of the southern Iraqi city of Najaf and several of his aides on corruption charges today.
Abdel-Muneim Amer Aboud was held in his office in the Shiite city.
He was installed by the Americans shortly after they entered the city in April, but the former Iraqi army colonel faced local opposition because of his military background.
Aboud was replaced by Haidar Mahdi al-Mayali. Details of al-Mayali's background was not immediately available.
A statement by the US led provisional authority said Aboud was also wanted on suspicion of kidnapping and holding hostages, pressuring government employees to perform financial crimes, and attacking a bank official.
