Did Bill Clinton inflict some extra lashes on himself in Hillary Rodham Clinton's best-selling memoir?

The former President may have taken a more active role than anyone suspected in the writing of "Living History," insiders tell us.

Sen. Clinton invited her husband's comments on her manuscript. Most of his suggestions "had to do with policy and the legacy of his administration," says one person familiar with his blue-penciling.

But it's said that he went so far as to suggest Hillary turn up the sturm und drang in the much-discussed passage where she confronts him about his affair with Monica Lewinsky.

While Hillary wrote that she wanted to "wring his neck," an insider says Bill recommended the line: "I could hardly breathe. Gulping for air, I started crying and yelling at him ... "

A source who saw an early draft of the manuscript recalls that the "gulping" phrase was not in the original copy: "It appeared from nowhere" after the book spent a night at the Clintons'.

Spokesmen for both Clintons said in a joint statement it was "absolutely untrue" that Bill had anything to do with that chapter.

"It didn't happen," says one of Bill's aides. "He did read the book beforehand and helped with the fact-checking. But he never suggested that language."

A person close to Hill adds: "Those are her memories, thoughts and words."

Then again, no one can feel someone's pain quite like Bill.

Parsing this, I think the translation is that the entire chapter didn't happen, thus bill had nothing to do with this chapter.
