Business and Labor Leaders Call on President to Halt Recall Effort
Five prominent business and labor leaders called on President Bush to stop the Republican-led effort to recall Democratic Governor Gray Davis. The bipartisan group made the plea in an opinion piece published in Sunday's Los Angeles Times.
The signers included Los Angeles developer and investor Eli Broad, Silicon Valley venture capitalist John Doerr, investment firm chairman Warren Hellman, California Federation of Labor head Art Pulaski and Arthur Rock, one of the founders of Intel.
The Times piece contended that the recall effort threatens to plunge a state already reeling from a gigantic budget deficit even deeper into chaos. "The president should demand an end to the recall effort because the nation cannot afford to have California's economy remain stuck in reverse," it said, in part.
The piece went on to claim that the recall is supported by a "narrow wing" of the Republican president's own party.
President Bush did not mention the recall effort when he was fund-raising in California on Friday. White House spokeswoman Ashley Snee on Sunday said the recall effort is a California matter and the White House is not involved.
Recall supporters must collect 897,158 valid signatures by September 2 to put to a statewide vote whether to remove or retain Davis as governor. As of last week, they had turned in 376,008, according to the California Secretary of State.
The more the merrier..
I love to watch the left on the run...I love to watch 'em sweat...
Both Sullan and Marian forces were establishmentarian, but the republic that each faction was striving to bend to their interests had less than 50 years remaining when Sulla tried, in vain, to restore by force the traditional Roman sense of nobility and common purpose.
Ah, what's the use! The acceptance that most of you sheeple have for the lessons of history keys on how entertaining it can be made for you. Some of you may watch the TNT mini series "Caesar" and be impressed by Ted Turner's spin that dictators who learn how to replace republics via clever sound bites ain't all that bad!

I hate to think that folks believe a man who reads lines from scripts is better suited to fixing the major problems that face this state than a man who has given himself to the pursuit of integrity and honesty and fair dealing in govt ..
But you know Californians. 1/3 don't want to bother voting (It's doesn't matter if I vote), 1/3 take their voter rights seriously, and 1/3 are bussed from polling place to polling place and kept in a "govtinduced" money high to keep the demRats in power.
I suppose he could threaten to hold up federal aid to California; Congressional Republicans would support him out of Party loyalty and Democrats would support him because it's their guy he's protecting. But if he did something like that, it would be tantamount to admitting that American democracy really is just a dog and pony show.
If there is something I am missing here, please enlighten me.
People out there really think that there is a tooth fairy and a welfare fairy and all that.
It's what our newer "leaner" more compassionate govt has become. A monstrosity of antiquated programs that no one can escape. "EnTitlement Nation"
Sometimes, I wonder how stupid this nation could be made in 50 years.
Then, I look at Jimmah Car\htah in the White House and China in Panama and the Western Hemisphere of influence.
Then, I see 8 years of Bubba and the shakedown artists selling off secrets and making sweetheart deals left and right... and barely a peep from most folks.
Is it that our enemies are that smart or did they just have to bring us down to their level first? The educational system in our nation is held hostage by unions and thugs. Our nation's sources of good-paying jobs are shipped offshore or performed here legally by folks who make a pittance of what American-born citizens might make.
Talk about discrimination. Does Corporate America really hate this country that badly, and if so, why? Has the same govt set of players on the House and Senate and White House teams, frankly killed our collective Golden Goose, by foisting FRee trade thru GATT, NAFTA, and all the visa hocus pocus legislation? All the while, telling us how it will be good for All of us. The lowliest turd does rise with the tide along with the rest of the turds, after all. I'd prefer not to live in a sewer myself, tho.
Dumbed down.. We couldn't get much dumber.. or can we?
Immigration.. Illegal Immigration .. Benefits paid out to Illegal Immigrants. Now, why do we do this? The states blame the Feds for lax border enforcement or prosecution. So, then, why do states then turn around and spend money to support them, and why do we then allow these same illegals to get same rate tuition at state universities.
I don't know , I get all confused these days. Words used to mean something.. Laws used to mean something.. Voters voting on initiatives like 187 and 209 and passing them used to matter.
I guess the message is.. I'm not quite dumb enough to believe all this crap.. much less, keep putting up with it.
The leadership of the two parties make up one ruling party -- RepublicRats. Just because it's unofficial doesn't make it a fiction.
Ummmmm why nothing, nothing to do a'tall.
But then again that's the whole point though, don'tcha know.
This is one slick attempt to deflect & obfuscate the very real *issues* that were created by a sleezy Liberal-Socialist Governor which now has delivered -- what was once a wealthy & prosperous -- CA to the brink of destruction.
This kind of mo hasn't been seen since the Liberal-Socialists tried getting the Bent1 off the hook for perjury.
Remember?
What'd Clintigula's mediots & assorted quislings try convincing us it was all about via a whole page ad run in every major daily in the USA?
"It's only about sex."
~eh?
See it??
"If there is something I am missing here, please enlighten me."
I think that about covers it Angel, the rest is up to you.
...you're the scholar, after all. :^)
