It will not be illegal for Churchs noty to perform gay marriages, it is a direct violation of their religious beliefs, a point easily proven.
Here's the thing.
We cannot both continue to demand that the Feds stay out of our Churches, and that they enforce our religious beliefs in the form of Amendments, Laws, and statutes.
Trust the Founders, and allow the issue to be decided by the States.

If same sex marriage becomes the law of the land, it will be illegal for ANY church to refuse to perform the ceremony - regardless of religious belief. We got to this point because religious belief is now considered to be a second-class belief and we are expected to step deferentially to the back of the bus without getting uppity about it. It isn't enough to be free of prejudice if one is simultaneously enslaved by other passions. (Apologies to Neal A. Maxwell).

Trust the Founders, and allow the issue to be decided by the States.I am afraid that on the current Supreme Court there will be at least 7 votes saying that a gay marriage in Massachusetts (assuming they adopt gay marraige, as expected) must be given full faith and credit in every state. And I don't know that the Supremes will be wrong from a constitutional standpoint.

Notice that this same argument didn't apply on the "right to sodomy" case.
