It seems pretty obvious to me that the framers of our constitution knew exactly the form of government that was being layed down and that it was not strictly a democracy or a republic but a democratic republic. This joins the best of both worlds and was supposed to temper the extreme or unhealthy changes possibly demanded by "the majority". But it seems that the more we allow ourselves to be pushed around by the supposed "majority" (small loudmouthed special interest activists) the farther our government gets away from the safety of the rule of law and representation provided by our well thought out constitution. Taking a look at some of our ammendments such as the seventeenth and seeing so many contradictions and changes to the original constitutions intent, I really dont see much hope for us not being pushed all the way into a possibly destructive form of democracy.
