Personally, I am strongly in favor of repealing the 17th Amendment.
Unfortunately, I belive that vast majority of Americans are too dumbed-down to understand why that would be a good thing. If it can't be explained in a ten second sound-bite, they lose interest...

it looks like the founders were libertarian to a man. and as you correctly note, of the lower case 'l' kind.

Article 4, Section 4 of the United States Constitution. The Constitution guarantees a Republican form of government for every state in America.
That is all I have to say.

If you believe our representitives do what their title implies instead of pandering to their party and ignoring their constituants. Now that they willfully exempt themselves from the limits applied to them what do we have?

FANTASTIC!!!
"Democracy will fail when the masses discover they can vote the treasury."
America, are you listening?
Your imminent collapse awaits should you ever vote Democratic again.

The problem isn't so much the form of government as it is how power is distributed. If the only power available is deciding which side of the street has parking on even days and which odd, it matters relatively little whether decider is dictator for life or elections are held once a week.

For as long as I can remember Republican president's who have presented themselves as conservative have not had the courage (or conviction) to come before the American people and declare that, for instance: "I am going to veto this insane budget because it is robbery. Here are the ways in which it is theft. 1, 2, 3, 4......."
It is not done out of fear. Fear that it would not be popular. Fear that the American people are so far gone that will no longer respond to common sense.
The Germans have a proverb: When courage is lost, all is lost.
Without the courage to present the case for a restrained republic we WILL have an out of control democracy.

It would be difficult to express it better that Teddy Roosevelt and his comments on the Fall of the Republic. This is an outstanding quote, and it's going in my quote file. Any idea where it came from (specific Roosevelt book, speech, etc.)? I found the quote in umpteen websites, but nobody I encountered gives a specific citation.

By forming what they called a Republic, in which representatives are chosen in many different ways (the President, House, Senate, and state officials are all elected differently), it is more difficult for a majority to control enough of the government to infringe upon a minority.More importantly (IMO), our system of government was intended to enshrine the rule of law, the 'sandbox' in which the government was allowed to play. Infringements by the majority over the minority were not just 'more difficult', they were supposed to be inconceivable (since they were outside the sandbox).

"The end is in sight. The only question is when will the collapse of democratic socialism finally be obvious to everyone. Pure democracy ends in violence and chaos. Let us hope someone somewhere has a good alternative ready to go when our social structures implode."

I agree it is better than most, but it is slowly slipping thru our fingers. The people do have a choice. We officially left the Republic in 1933 and became a democracy/socialist system. In short the Constitution gives us that choice. Article IV, Section 3, Clause 1 or 2. In the beginning we were a Republic which comes under Clause 1, but as stated above we gave up being responsible for ourselves and chose a new money system and to be taken care of from cradle to grave. It will take some effort, understanding and make some changes to get back to a Republic in form.

The article the retired Doctor wrote is pretty much on target, in my opinion.Jean should you get time you might go to a link on the website: www.propertyrightsresearch.org/article4/law.htm and read that document/treatise about why and how the people can return back to our Republic and maybe save this country before it is to late. The author of this document as stated has researched the issue for many years. I have been fortuate of being one of his students. Maybe the Doctor will get a chance to read it too.
