Proposal to add cash for S.F. schools

BY ADRIEL HAMPTON
Of The Examiner Staff

Standing with teachers, parents and campaign supporters, Supervisor Tom Ammiano on Thursday announced a nearly $7 million plan to fund schools, HIV/AIDS programs and hospital translators.

Ammiano's plan calls on the supervisors' budget committee to cut battalions at the fire department, cut the police overtime budget and shift nearly $5 million in street cleaning costs to the fatter Public Utilities Commission budget.

Margaret Brodkin of Coleman Advocates, a youth-oriented nonprofit, said Ammiano's plan helps break the "Berlin Wall down Van Ness" between City Hall and the school district.

School Board members Sarah Lipson, Mark Sanchez and Dan Kelly joined Ammiano for the announcement at City Hall.

"I hope this is just the beginning," Kelly said.

Parents, advocates and politicians all said they hope for a closer relationship between the state-funded school district and The City.

Ammiano and Treasurer Susan Leal, both candidates for mayor, are vying for attention on the issue of more money for schools, as local teachers and support staff face hundreds of layoffs. Leal recently fought for a schools trust fund and a budget appropriation that would have helped save more summer school programs.

Ammiano and the rest of the supervisors voted for the trust fund, but on a split vote decided to hold off on funding it until later in their budget deliberations.

Ammiano's Thursday move would put $5 million into the fund, with direction it be used to stave off teacher layoffs. Another $300,000 would go for a study on reducing truancy. The recommendations are subject to budget committee approval.

As long as it's local money, it's theirs' to do with as they choose. If this city wants to spend money on the discriminatory public school system which is failing to educate children, hospital translators for families who have not prodiced a single family member who can speak English to assist in the care of their loved one, while cutting police and fire protection, it is their choice to make.

It will just continue the decline of what was once an appealing place for many to live.

Oh well, I have no plans to visit Sodom by the Sea.

Californians ARE on the brain time-share program, aren't they? There can't be THAT many non-thinkers living in the same part of the country...or maybe there are!
