You should see the corner of Western and Santa Monica. I made the mistake of driving by there around 1980, during the middle of a week day.

There on the sidewalks were textile wares stacked high. You could barely see a square inch of sidewalk. I'm not talking about stands set up on the sidewalk, I mean this stuff was laying on the dirty sidewalk. In addition there were more shopping baskets per 100 square feet than I have seen most times in a supper market's checkout lanes.

If I hadn't known better, I'd have sworn I was in Calcutta or some such. Third-world is exactly the right term.

You know what's really sad? In two hundred years someone will land on the moon and find the US flag there. They will be very confused. They will look at the USA as it exists then and wonder how America ever made it to the moon. Kinda like we see the pyramids today and wonder how Egyptians could have ever made such magnificent structures.
