Man Gets Prison in Stabbing that Killed Woman's Fetus

(June 27) -- a 35-year-old Las Vegas man will spend at least eight years in prison for stabbing his pregnant girlfriend in the stomach and aborting the fetus.

Jesus Villagomez pleaded guilty last month to attempted murder -- while prosecutors dismissed a second, rarely used charge of manslaughter of an unborn "quick" child. Flora Solorio was 18 weeks pregnant when Villagomez stabbed her repeatedly during a domestic dispute in October.

The stabbing ended her pregnancy. The plea deal avoided a Clark County District Court trial and a challenge to the constitutionality of the manslaughter charge.

Villagomez's defense lawyer was prepared to argue that the term "quick child" is too vague. Under Thursday's sentence, Villagomez also has to pay more than $63,000 to cover Solorio's medical bills.

Well, actually the term is quite specific, if I am not mistaken. It means a child old enough, large enough really, I suppose, that its movement can be felt by the mother. 18 weeks should be far enought along for that.

And hey, brethren & sistren freepers, this guy was trying to kill his girlfriend, and did kill this baby. Why are you all acting like she got some freebie abortion and is really the one to blame? I mean, I know that's not what you're saying, but geez, that's what it sounds like. She DIDN'T get an abortion, she got stabbed. The murderer of her child, who was attempting to murder her is going to jail. Of course abortion should be illegal, but you know, all these convictions of bad men like this fellow will only help to make that happen. Letting him off would certainly please NARAL. This conviction only serves to further confuse their already addled minds.

However you feel about unborn children, you must admit they are living organisms (does anyone doubt this?). The unborn child was killed (ie, it was alive, and now it's dead). This doesn't seem like rocket science to me. Especially because there was clear intent on the part of the boyfriend to kill child. As the pro-abortion crowd might say to this woman: "It's not a child, and it's not your choice."
