Another Catholic ex-Baptist? Me too! Easter 2000.
Great point on the Real Presence - next time my still-Baptist father & I are revisiting that issue, I'll be sure to use it. He is so close, SO CLOSE to believing. He doesn't receive communion in the Baptist church because he feels unworthy, though when I point out that if it's only symbolic, what does it matter, he has no answer. Maybe the fact that even the devil-worshippers believe will be what it takes to push him over. Thanks a lot!

In reference to your post #74:
Actually, now some are saying that the books were written in the order in which they appear (1. Matt....4. John). You must be tuning in to the Jesus Seminar to talk about "reliability" and "currying favor."
To: Skywalk
I should've explained. John was supposed to have been written alomst 100 yrs. after Jesus' death. That is still claimed by these scholars--it's just that the other books predated John.
To: Maximilian; Polycarp
Supermax--Thanks for the ping. It's summer, and I'm having a hard time keeping up! See my post 342-3 to Skywalk's 74.
I haven't time to scroll and looksee, but did anyone bring up that the ADL is challenging the script? And at one time so was the UCCB? (I think I heard that isn't the case so much now.) At any rate, Gibson was suing both those organizations!
Also, did you know that the ADL is effecting changes of the once-every-ten-years passion play at Oberamergau? There is a big push now to discredit John as well as Matthew--and the pc pillar within the Church is only too happy to comply.
This is WAR!

um... the < /sarcasm> tag was there for a reason. No offense was meant. No, Please accept *my* apologies for jumping the gun and being presumptous.
The literal translation that I have for:
Benedicat vos omnipotens Deus, Pater, et Filius, et Spiritus Sanctus
is...May Almighty God bless you; The Father, The Son, and The Holy Ghost...
and of course, I threw in Mel's name, to bless him too!
Thanks for calling me on it to explain myself, and have a Blessed Sunday!

Not channeling Jesus Seminar at all, but scholarship that far pre-dates that meeting.
No more than someone attempting to determine the veracity of Buddha's REAL life or Kung Fu Tzu's early life or Lao Tzu's life, etc. And if I'm not mistaken Quetzalcoatl was a real life person, but Toltec not Aztec. That didn't stop him from becoming a god.

it is a niche film in a foreign language with no sutitles. It may be good, but few will actually see it.This is only a guess, and I could be wrong, but chalk me up in the "blockbuster" category. I believe this movie could be HUGE.
To: pram
Just about the only movies I'll consent to watch are Mel Gibson movies. Anyone know of a website that lists "clean" movies? Can't think of one listing just "clean" movies. I can, however, recomend one that reveiws all movies with direct honesty and christain guidance.

The Gospel accounts of the crucifixion put into a script without embellishment would take 10 minutes to film ... Ok, I see what you are saying. I thought you talking about the entire ministry of Christ, rather than just the crucifixion.

Oh yeah, the big news media have a field day with us, almost as much as they do Catholic Christians. (The televangelist scandals of the 80s didn't help of course.) Oh well, what was it Jesus said, "If they hate me, they'll hate you"?

Thank you for posting this. I'm so tired of all the carping about this work. I don't see many movies, but this one will be a "must see."
I own two Gibson movies: Gallipoli and The Patriot. When this is out on video or DVD, it sounds like it will be "must add" to my collection.

The scriptures are not merely "written in the bulletin", they are read during the Mass and written in the missil. And the best "teaching" priests further incorporate them into their homilies.
To: afraidfortherepublic
And the best "teaching" priests further incorporate them into their homilies. Yes, they do.
We have one priest that visits once or twice a year who givies his homily before the readings in order to inform us of what to listen for and what it means.

My dad, grandmother and grandfather were Catholic.
I have on more than one occasion asked and received answer, of which I disagree. Even here on FreeRepublic.

Are you even Christian?

There's no rating yet as far as I could find, way too early for that. Shouldn't be "R" though. No need for that. As far as it being too gory for children, some may view it as so, but it would make more of an impact that way. IMHO, that's the way films with the Crucifiction should have been done all along. The way Mel is doing this one. This should be a blockbuster. However, in this pc world led in part by the whorelywierd crowd, it may not be. Pity if that would be the case. Can't wait to see it.

Look, if Catholics say, "We believe X," and you say, "No you don't; you believe Y," whose fault is that?
