Judge Seeks Answers On Convicted Eye-Gouger's Release
Hearing For Campbell Scheduled For Monday

HOUSTON -- A state district judge wants answers on why a man who gouged his girlfriend's eyes with a steak knife was released from supervision without the court's permission.
Judge Debbie Mantooth Stricklin has scheduled a hearing Monday in the case of Nathan Dale Campbell (pictured, left), who was released from a state hospital to a San Antonio boarding house where he was then returned to the street.
Until the hearing, Campbell is being treated as an outpatient at Kerrville State Hospital.
Campbell, 29, was supposed to be moved from the state hospital to an outpatient facility to continue treatment for bipolar disorder with Stricklin's oversight. Instead, he was taken Friday to the boarding house without Stricklin's knowledge.
Harris County jurors decided in 1997 that Campbell was innocent of the attack the previous year on his girlfriend, Kristen West, because he was legally insane.
