It's never happened before but this fall, or no later than next spring, Gov. Gray Davis seems destined to face a recall election that could well end his governorship.
Davis supporters loudly proclaim this is an unjustified right-wing coup to undo last year's election results. They are right about the right-wing part, but wrong about justification. In fact, this recall is exactly what the Progressive reformers had in mind when they added direct democracy, including recall of public officials, to our Constitution 90 years ago.

At least we will send a msg to Dems And Pubbies alike.
We DO have the power to remove you so don't think you can cheat everybody and get away with it.
I for one am willing to shoot the dice on this recall.
If they can't find anything on Tom McClintock it sure won't be for lack of trying, in fact, they will invent something out of whole cloth if they can.
Such is the nature of Cal democrats and there accomplises in the media.
They aren't FORCED to do anything. If they don't want Grey-out Davis around because he wastes their time and money, they don't have to keep the joint open for them.
Like the old saying, "Fool me once, Shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me."
They aren't FORCED to do anything.
You're right and if they had half the fortitude that I believe you have they would express their displeasure. Still, the story speaks volumes about this man. It reminded me of the time Klintoon kept LAX backed up so he could have a haircut on AF1.
BTW, I own a CRV too! ;^)
ROTFLOL! My husband and I were talking about that last night. Billy Jeff spent $200 on that haircut and I couldn't even tell he got it cut. I told my husband if I pay $200 to get a haircut, it better look like a $200 haircut.
All of which means a very fractured vote. And the winner is NOT whoever gets a majority, but whoever gets the most votes, even if it is only 5% of the total. Which means that ANYTHING can happen. A-N-Y-T-H-I-N-G.
Arnold could win, on name recognition. Or Ralph Nader. Or O.J. Simpson. Or Johnnie Cochran. Or Gloria Allred. The fact is, it probably won't be a politician or a businessman. In fact, because name recognition will be so important, I predict an entertainer or other celebrity will be the next Governor. I just have no idea who.
It should be very entertaining.
Naw. The Dems (at this point) except for Feinstein are loyal to Davis.
Once the rats see that Davis' ship is sinkging their loyatly will fizzle, and a few will announce their intent to "save" the Cal democrats from the "evil" right wing.
Others will be jumping ship to distance themselves from this admin. thereby keeping their own futures intact.
Liberals really have no loyalty bigger than themselves.
Very funny. Try getting the crap taxed out of you and try paying our energy bills, and see how funny it is.
Hello? Reference? Being an out of stater I should inform you that even with huge majorities of Democrates in the Legislature, and a Green Marxist as Gov, they still have not been able to raise taxes directly [yet] because of propositions, and the 2/3rd required to pass a budget. California politics is very complicated, not to be dipped in toe first as you are.
Democratic gubernatorial candidates will already materialize in 2005.
Tell us why we care? The recall will be happening in the fall of 2003, and Davis-term will serve til 2007. If the GOP replacement is talking about increasing spending and raising taxes while -$38.2 bil in the hole, I'm sure WE will all support getting rid of him too.
Let the state burn, which will teach the rest of the Republic a lesson in socialism.
How unbelievably empathetic... There are very real solutions to the budget crisis that a Republican Gov can solve. As ScottinSacto pointed out to you, if you allow us to "burn" (how sweet of you) being the majority state of the US economy, we will bring down the ENTIRE economy. That means a serious challenge to Bush in 04, and the possible reversal in the Republican Revolution.
All because of some lack of faith and resolve in conservative ideas resonating with the electorate. If this isn't Conservatives biggest obsticle in America, I don't know what is.
There are too many lessons on socialism already, and this is a grass roots revolt against it already. We are more fed up then those of you outside California seem to have any clue of, and we are gaining converts from former liberals. What the Clintons did for the U.S. Legislator in 94, Davis will likely do for the California Legislator in 04, not because there was a recall and not because there was not a recall--but for the same reason there is a recall. Try as they might to shift the blame, a majority of Californians have finally figured out what political party has brought us this mess.
I did. I left. You should too. Would you like me to call a waaaaah-bulance?
I was kinda hoping for a year long state-wide Rodney King style riot followed by finale that combines the worst features of the destruction of Sodom and the book of Revelation.
Not that I didn't enjoy my stay there.
Thanks Bullish, I'm getting alittle frustrated though. I can't get a decent arguement out of these anti-recallers. If one didn't know better they'd say they were operating on ignorance, fecklessness, and emotional bitterness at the perceived stature of the Golden State. I keep picking up from the louder out of staters a total lack of any desire to understand the details surrounding the recall, because they don't CARE about whether it can work-their goal is to see us fail, and our state knocked down. I've heard the word "destroyed" used a number of times. Its petty and childish, but worse, its sincere.
If we did have an economic collapse with run away unemployment and riots in the streets, I think we'd get some condolences, some Amens to our complaining, and encouragement to just move away---yet out of view, they'd be high fiving eachother about the arrogant Californians "being brought down a peg or two." Reminds me alot of 9/11, Americans think that all rational people felt our pain, but the European Left paid us lip service and did just that behind our back. Nobody ever said life was fair. That kind of bitterness and cynicism doesn't get ahead in life. We can't be bitter, hell its sunny here every day!
If the Rats take over the federal government and start running it into the ground are you gonna just move to another country? How very brave of you.
