FBI seeking all Makarov replacement barrels
The FBI is conducting a nationwide campaign to seize, and ballistically fingerprint, all Makarov 9 mm replacement barrels manufactured by Federal Arms Corp.
Anyone who has purchased a barrel from FAC may receive a call from the FBI, asking that they "voluntarily" surrender the gun and the barrel so the FBI can fire two rounds through it to take a ballistic fingerprint.
This appears to be part of the investigation into the homicide of Thomas Wales, an Assistant U.S. Attorney who was murdered in his Seattle, WA home in October, 2001. Wales was also involved in Washington CeaseFire, a gun control group. Apparently, ballistics from his homicide indicate that the fatal rounds were fired from a Makarov replacement barrel.
If you are contacted by the FBI regarding your Makarov replacment barrel, contact an attorney IMMEDIATELY before you talk to them or before you surrender your barrels to them.

that short of producing a warrant on the spot,My understanding is that the officers executing the search need not have the warrant with them; that the search my legally proceed immediately after the judge signs it (think radio).
It's always good form to ask for a copy of the warrant, or if they even have one...

"Gee........that Makarov I had.....gosh!....can't seem to remember where I put it. It's been a long time, you know. Heh...I misplace my car keys sometimes, too. Dang! Wish I could help you gentlemen, but I just don't know where the little bugger is! Have a nice day! See ya!"

It's always good form to ask for a copy of the warrant, or if they even have one... Of course. In this case, there wasn't a crime involved nor had I broken any laws. They just REALLY wanted to take a close look at my gun collection without any reasonable cause to do so. I would have loved to see the basis for them getting a warrant in this case, particularly since I was really letting it slide how they "discovered" that I had a lovely collection in the first place.

I did not know about this investigation when the local F.B.I. agent contacted me a few weeks ago. I let the agent borrow my pistol to shoot a couple of 9x17 rounds through it. A friend of mine in the Seattle area sent me a recent link after my description of the incident.
http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/localnews/2001128276_wales17.html The local F.B.I. agent was okay so I was cooperative and we exchanged quite a bit of information although the agent did not specificially mention the murdered prosecutor's name.
I was annoyed to more recently read articles like the one at
http://www.enterstageright.com/archive/articles/0102/0102martyr.htm which indicate that this investigation has more to do with gun control politics than justice.
I do know that the owner of Federal Arms keeps all purchase records forever for just this type of situation to share with law enforcement so I will never buy anything from that firm again.
