GILBERT - Known around Gilbert for her photography at the Pentagon and for her courage to return to work in Virginia after the Sept. 11, 2001, attack there, Mamie Burke returned to her hometown Tuesday for her 30th high school reunion.

I found her admiration for General Myers and her sense of duty to be very touching. A great role model. A good article.
My first posting. Sorry, if it's a mess.

Great post! I found pictures taken by her but no picture OF her. You are right, she is a great role model, and I found her loyalty and affection for General Myers quite touching.

I think this is one of the best articles I've read by folks who were in the Pentagon and how hard it is/was to return to work there. And for one, I think her admiration of Gen. Myers is not misplaced. I watch the Pentagon briefings more for him than for Rummy - donning my flame-proof suit, as the Rummy chicks start to throw things at me!

I wish we could see more articles like this on the front page of newspapers. This article was on page 4. On the front page were the local officials being indicted.

She really is from a small town. Gilbert has no red lights. If you blink driving through you might miss it. She is to be admired for her accomplishments. And I love hearing good news about people like Gen. Myers who hold leadership positions.

I found it odd that the story didn't feature a picture of Mamie Burke.

Actually there was a picture of her in the paper edition of the News-Star. She is shown standing in front of a curtain, not a close-up. Very poor quality, you can't really tell what she looks like. As a photographer she would be ashamed of the picture. I am going to write to the editor and the reporter (
amiles@thenewsstar.com) of this piece, complimenting her on the article, and asking that she perhaps do another feature piece on her and her photos.

Nana, this neat article deserves a bump to the top!

"He is doing so much to heal and build relationships with other countries. I would take a bullet for him." That was just a stunning quote. Mamie Burke is someone I would like to meet.

That is an incredible quote. Especially coming from someone whose ethnic group is so across-the-board "anti-Bush"! I'm impressed.
