CNN In Big Ad Shakeout [Top Money Man Quits]
NY Daily News ^ | June 25, 2003 | Phyllis Furman

FOX News is rattling the cage of one time cable king.

With an aggressive FOX News Channel on course to topple CNN on the crucial ad sales front, CNN's top money man is abruptly signing off.

Larry Goodman, a 19 year CNN veteran who used to make sales calls with CNN founder Ted Turner-is stepping down at a time when the AOL owned network has been dramatically overrun by the Fox News Channel and is facing resistance from advertisers.

With marquee personalities like Bill O'Reilly, FOX News has now trounced CNN in the ratings for 18 straight months and is almost doubling the Turner Networks Primetime ratings.

For years CNN has managed to command premium ad prices by touting its affluent audience. But as the FOX rating momentum continues to build, the CNN ad sales team faces intense pressure, with FOX now narrowing the gap where it counts -in ad sales.

'Larry Goodman has taken the fall for a situation that is well beyond his control,' said Mike Drexler, CEO of media buying firm Optimedia International . From a programming point of view, FOX is kicking their *ss.'

Wage the assault on the Web, too.

Don't visit the CNN site. Your hit gives them ammo to increase their ad rates and revenues.

Naa!

CNN will never change anymore than the NY Slimes will.

Their arrogance will slowly eat away at their number of viewers or subscribers as their ad $'s fall.

What is very important about this is the increase in Ad $'s by most companies in May and June with intent of even more ad $ spending by a lot of key American Businesses.

One of these days, some real bean counters at the AOL/Time Warner level will say it is time to sell off CNN to the highest bidder. Maybe ChIraq and France will buy CNN and move the rats to France.

Interesting that Mort Zuckerman's Daily News is reporting this. I wonder if the NY Slimes will.

All CNN sites are blocked on my Dish Tv box. People should do this on their cable boxes.

Interesting that CNN has now been reduced to totaling their ad revenue with Headline News to obscure the fact that FOX is winning.

CNN Network and Headline News will generate 450 million next year between them and Fox News will do 400 million by itself.

I don't know if he has enough money after the last two years of the free fall of AOL/TW navs.

He is down to his last 600 million or so.

IMO, O'Reilly is the worst thing on Fox, even including Whorealdo and Van Cistern.

Could CNN be playing DIRTY games to get its viewership up by screwing the FNC? Check out this THREAD.

I have worked in Sales here in NYC. I can tell you that it takes YEARS to build up contacts in the media and entertainment industry.

This sales guy is taking the fall. CNN will prolly find that they lose even more sales as old relationships no longer have a sounding board.

One of the most prolific advertisers on FNC that I have noticed is CNN.

I don't know if it my cable company doing all the promos or CNN buying time - but I find it very amusing that CNN are being pushed on FNC all day long!!!!
