I think it's more of a tip from Khalid now that he's talking than anything else.
Al-Marri was sent over here right before 9/11 and has been in custody ever since December 2001. He also supposedly knows how to whip up cyanide gas, which is a Very Bad Thing if he gets in contact with other US cell members. So while that would put him out of the loop as far any post-December 2001 plots go, it's still reason enough to take him off the streets for awhile.
