Well, at least he won't have to pay for his own prescriptions.

They picked a video card which is considered a poor preforming lemon. And for $1699 you can build a computer with the fastest 800MHZ FSB P4 CPU, a Springdale Chipset board, lots and lots of RAM and an ATI9000 VId card. And still have money left over.

Doubtful. I work in a university computer lab with several hundred PCs and Macs. The Macs are the far better machine, but there's no way you will ever convince 90% of PC users to change. I use to be a big PC guy, but now I generally use my Mac for everything. Unfortunately, they will probably never get above a 10% share of the market.

Doesn't Jobs give this same speach every year? ..just update the numbers on the processors, the prices pretty much stay the same.

In the interest of full disclosure: I have been burnt on the wheel of Apple more times than I care to mention again. I've gone through a 12 step program and am now a happy W2K user/admin.

...well, I guess I wrongly dismissed the IBM involvement. It was a funny thought, anyway. I think that software-intensive systems will be the wave of the future, with simple hardware archetecture to run it...so upgrades will come easily, without new machines being necessary.

I have always used Windows machines, but for my present field of endeavor, the Mac blows the doors off everything else. Final Cut Pro 4 has just demolished any advantage the Avid system of video and audio editing had, and has some features of pro audio systems which are expensive individually...now bundled in, for free.

As a consumer, I'm happy about it. As a pro user...even happier.

Please elaborate and quantify. "Far better" in what ways? Give me specifics.

Ah, but the article neglects to mention the key criterion for me in selecting my next computer: Will Bioware issue "NeverWinter Nights" for the Mac?

Benchmark comparisons can be tricky, and competitors will no doubt be combing through the details. The Dell Computer system Jobs discussed in his speech contained a 533MHz bus. Intel started shipping 800MHz bus chipsets a few months ago.

They sure can be tricky. Nothing like rigging a benchmark in your favor.

Like when Mac users claim that their machines are faster than PCs, but neglect to mention that the MACs are running with virtual ram turned off while Windows always runs with virtual ram turned on. Let's turn the MAC's virtual ram on, then compare numbers.

LOL.

Bill and Steve and their respective companies have been at it now for 20+ years. Apple is still waiting for its first victory. It'll be the same story in 10 years. You'll be asking the fries question long before Bill does.

Isn't it time that the Macophiles started asking themselves why? I have a few answers.

And as a bonus, every one you buy is equivalent to giving a contribution directly to the DNC.

This seems weak in the Graphics area, stong elsewhere until the Athlon 64 comes out in Q4!

You have, of course, nailed the primary reason for buying any computer -- will it run the software I need to run? I suspect, however, that market share will ultimately move video and audio editing to the cheapest platform. What college kids are using are pirated copies of Premiere.

Read your mail, thanks. One last question: You would be using OS-X, right?

The Macs are the far better machine.....Q: Please elaborate and quantify. "Far better" in what ways? Give me specifics.

Well for starters...it's a much easier system to master. Witness that Windows 98 is actually Mac 84. Mac was doing it easier and better...first. The PC crowd blatantly copied the features for that very good reason. I'm writing this on an iMac. I'm doing so because most teachers (like me) were raised on Macs...they serve the purposes of education extremely well. Most of the folks I know who specialize in graphic web design all agree that Macs are superior in this area. Mac OS X crashes far less than other operating systems. BEST OF ALL there are extremely FEW computer virus' that affect the mac! If a PC virus hits me...no damage, no effect, except that I can pass it on unknowingly...although my virus protection usually wipes it out anyway.
