The University of Haifa and the Italian Trento Center for Scientific and Technological Research (IRST) signed a $1.5 million three-year agreement on Thursday to cooperate on software and artificial intelligence research.
The deal ensures that a concrete financial agreement will exist between the institutions which established an informal relationship two years ago, said Oliviero Stock, former director of IRST and current senior fellow.
According to the details of the agreement, IRST will supply $1m. or two-thirds of the finances for the research and the University of Haifa will provide the remaining $500,000. Stock will coordinate details of the program along with Prof.r Martin Charles Golumbic, director of the Caesarea Rothchild Institute at the University of Haifa where the artificial intelligence research will be conducted. Both parties acknowledged the mutual benefits to their respective countries that could arise from their collaboration.
"The joint work with our researchers will provide a bridge to the EU," Golumbic said, commenting on the opportunities for interdisciplinary computer applications within the European community.
Stock emphasized the political elements of the deal, noting that government of Trentino, the northern Italian home of IRST, gave support to the project. "This is a specific agreement that includes both funds and a political message," he said. "There is a particular motivation for doing something in Israel in difficult times."
The collaboration between the two institutions takes place within the larger framework of the 2002 agreement between Israel and Italy on scientific industrial R&D cooperation, said Alessandro Cattaneo, commercial attache for the Italian Embassy. Within this agreement, the two governments will provide at least $2.3m. year to jumpstart cooperation in such hi-tech fields as medicine, telecommunication, agriculture, and biotechnology.
The deal between the University of Haifa and IRST coincided with the Italian-Israeli Forum on Computer Science which was convened within the Gateway exhibition in Tel Aviv on Tuesday and Wednesday. The Gateway conference promoted economic relations between the EU and Israel. "When you have the possibility to meet each other, you find even more ways of financing specific projects," Alessandro said.
