A former Brooklyn judge allegedly was asked to pay more than $100,000 to stay on the bench - and then lost her seat after she refused, The Post has learned. Congressman Ed Towns and a lawyer who handled his election matters in 2000, Bernard "Mitch" Alter, allegedly asked Judge Maxine Archer for the sum, a confidant told The Post. "They wanted about $160,000 from Maxine," the confidant said. "I know that for a fact.".........It was actually a request for $140,000, and it was for campaign expenses, Alter told The Post. He provided a copy of a written estimate he had given Archer in May 2000, including $56,000 for petitioning, mailing and Election Day operations, plus $54,000 in consulting fees. They should investigate legislators' role, as well. But that would involve so many and there's so little time. (/sarcasm off)

Either the price is for prestige, or the price is for the opportunity to peddle influence, which is even worse. Which do you think is the reason prospective judges would consider going along with this?

Probably six of one half a dozen of the other ....prestige and the profit-making motive (through the selling of influence).

Greed and avarice blind these individuals to their corruptness and the selling out of the justice system which is the bedrock of our system of government.

It is sort of like a franchise fee. You pay mcdonalds a fee to operate with the mcdonalds name and get some assurance that another mcdonalds won't open across the street. Here, a safe democrat seat is sold for a fee. In contested areas, the seat is less valuable and the fee is less.

Where's a judge going to get $160k from? Its not as if fund raisers for judges are high ticket items. I think its time to investigate her rulings and see if some major players got something in return for their money.

It is sort of like a franchise fee. [..snip..] Here, a safe democrat seat is sold for a fee.

I agree with your first statement. If you buy the franchise, you take the bribes... or the prestige... whichever. However, these aren't "safe" seats because there is no risk to being a judge. If I'm not mistaken, these are not elected judgeships, they are appointed. Once you're appointed, you're in. In some other states, judges stand for re-election. I don't think that's the case in NY.

More on my post #8: After re-reading the article, it looks like the judgeships are appointed--and re-appointed--by the in-power political party. Hence any payment would be for whatever is the usual term. It would be more like renting a judgeship than buying one! Oh, the complexities of political commerce.
