"But it's too bad for the snatched kids, who in many cases are raised as Americans and then yanked into a barbaric, pre-medieval culture."

Speaking of barbaric pre-medieval cultures, there's an awful lot of advocacy for natural selection going on right here in America.
We call ourselves a civilization when we transcend the law of the jungle and do not abandon our weak, helpless, poor, immature and aged people. When we can protect, rescue, and lift them up, we do it. We don't say, "That's what she gets for being foolish," or "too bad for the kids."
This situation and most others of women trapped in SA can be remedied quite simply. If it's policy not to intervene in a way that would solve the problem, open policy book and rip out the pertinent page of policy. Rewrite it to address the egregious wrongs. Lean on the Saudis and demand the release of the unwilling residents of SA and the extradition of those who have kidnapped children, defied American court orders, and acted as accomplices in these crimes.

If you take away the oil picture...the Saudis are just a bunch of corrupt businessmen who will screw anyone over. The US realized this after the oil crisis of the early 70s, and simply kept going back to the Saudis asking for more pain and suffering. There is no reason to support them or the Kuwaitis. We need to pack up and go. Let the middle east burn...they deserve it.

"Is there a diplomatic sovereign[t]y issue between an Embassy and a Consulate?"

No, a Consulate is considered sovereign soil of the country that maintains it, just like an Embassy. Embassies do tend to be better guarded, though.

I agree. But until that happens - and, "simple" or not, it hasn't happened yet - American women would be well advised not to marry Saudis. By now, they ought to know what they're walking into. Since history suggests they can't expect the protection of the US Government, it's up to them to protect themselves and their future children.

You win. I know one can never win an argument with a women, even when one has the facts. I've read the Mars/Venus thing.

I didn't even argue with my wife when she got on to me for putting the coffee beans in the freezer. I let her win. Funny thing, this morning, when I asked her where the other bag of coffee was, she said it was 'in the freezer'! I just smiled and didn't say a word ....

Please don't confuse me with a cult follower. I am not blindly loyal to individuals as such. I am thankful that Mr. Bush is president because he has, thus far, consistently adhered to high principles. It's the principles that count with me, and I am grateful to God that we have, once again, a president of conviction and authenticity. But should he stumble, I don't follow him.

She did not choose this marriage, it was forced upon her, what part of arranged marriage did you not understand. She is being held prisoner & Bush is doing nothing. I wonder if he would feel different if it was one of his own daughters?

Welcome to Free Republic!

How do you know that President Bush is 'doing nothing'?

International relations are like icebergs - most of them are unseen.

I’m pretty sure Bush wouldn’t let his daughter near any Saudis in the first place.
