Californians Beware - Front Plate Advisement
Self | 06/18/2003 | Self

I was informed by my auto insurance agent that as of the 1st of this year there is a new inforcement of the motor vehicle code.

Many Californians (myself included) have neglected to attach the license plate to the front bumber. The main reason being that it is not attractive.

According to my auto insurance broker: having no front plate is now a "moving violation" which leads to a large fine and higher insurance premiums.

The reason for this is the inferrence that if one has no front plate, one is attempting to evade the cameras which photograph cars that ignore red lights.

In the recent past, no front plate was a "fix it" ticket, that is if you remedy the problem and prove it, there is no problem and little if any fine (usually a warning).

Bottom line is; no front plates might lead to a "moving violation," high fine and increased insurance rate. Not to mention if you've had a glass of wine or two - then arrest for suspected DUI.

Gotta cure the State deficit somehow.

When the subject of cameras that photograph license plates was discussed on here a couple months ago, several Freepers posted info on plastic license plate covers that deflect the camera and the plate registers blank. I want one!

Put one of those plastic covers on it that's almost impossible to read the plate when it's dirty or scratched :)

Did you guys see that thread about the city that shortened the yellow light that had the camera on it? All yellow lights were 4 seconds except the light with the camera. It was 2.9 seconds. They were making a lot of money. When this information was published in the local paper, all lights were changed to 3.5.

Oh, great - just what I need. A front bumper license!

My plate (frame) is a dead giveaway, too. <|:)~

Good point...but I would guess that if a traffic cop saw a cover on the front plate that made it illegible, they'd stop you anyway...to give you a warning.

The biggest issue for me is - if I go out to dinner and split a bottle of wine, the cop stops me for the plate issue then decides to make sure I'm under .08.

Many moons ago, I moved from Texas to Georgia. There was a colony of transplanted Texans who worked for the same company, and we kept our Texas plates on the front and put the Georgia ones on the back, since Georgia did not require front plates.

A few years later, I moved to New Jersey, driving a car with Texas plates on the front, Georgia on the back! LOL I can't believe I never got pulled over.

Perhaps we should all just have a rep from the state ride around with us at all times eh? I don't know how we ever get along without their direction.

Hey - The DMV (California Department of Motor Vehicles) sent me two sets of plates (Big surprise -they're so stupid). I've given thought to putting the different plate on the front and the legitimate plate on the back.

Of course that would be proof on the face that I was trying to be evasive;
