It is illegal to sell armor piercing "pistol" ammunition to the general public. Because the ATF ihas practically no oversight, they declared 7.62X39 AP and 7.62 NATO (.308) AP as "pistol" ammunition. Biggest bunch of horseshit I ever heard.

If someone started chambering a pistol in 50 BMG, they would probably outlaw surplus AP ammo in that clliber too. It doesn't make any difference to them that those calibers of 'pistols' are about as likely to be used in a crime against a cop in a vest as is a muzzle loading cannon .
