For the second consecutive year, Kelsey Grammer hosts a dazzling array of stars who entertain the nation's leaders in "An American Celebration at Ford's Theatre." The television special was taped in Washington, DC, before a live audience [March 2, 2003] that included President George W. Bush and Mrs. Laura Bush and many Washington dignitaries.

The annual gala benefiting historic Ford's Theatre in Washington, DC, kicks off with Kelsey Grammer charming the audience with his welcoming remarks. Grammy winner LeAnn Rimes performs her sultry hit single, "Suddenly"; ABC star George Lopez (George Lopez) brings down the house with his comedic monologue; six-year-old singer Jamia Simone Nash captivates the crowd with the soulful "Fallin'" by Alicia Keys; Sam Waterston performs a powerful tribute to Abraham Lincoln; Grammy Award-winning bluegrass artist Alison Krauss and Union Station featuring Jerry Douglas sing "Down to the River to Pray" and "I Am a Man of Constant Sorrow"; contemporary artist Brian McKnight sings "Shoulda, Woulda, Coulda"; and film and TV actress Michelle Lee (Knots Landing) honors Mrs. Lincoln with a tribute. Country music's wildly popular group, Lonestar, performs the rollicking "Front Porch Lookin' In" and a deeply moving tribute to America's armed forces and their families, "I'm Already There." Tom Scott and the American Celebration Orchestra round out the lineup and also lead the finale, "Battle Hymn of the Republic," which is followed by a brief speech by President Bush.

This year marks the 23rd televised gala at Ford's Theatre since its reopening in 1968. For 104 years following President Lincoln's assassination, this national treasure remained dark as a symbol of national mourning. On January 30, 1968, a restored Ford's Theatre opened, dedicated as a memorial to Lincoln's love of the performing arts. In 1975 President Ford became the first president to attend a gala at the Theatre since its closure in 1865.

I'd encourage everyone to visit Ford's theater if given the opportunity. During the day, the stage is a replica of the "Our American Cousin" set (the play Lincoln was watching when assasinated), and park rangers give a comprehensive tour of the building. At night, the theater has all the features of a modern-day theater, with the exception of the presidential box which remains in its 1865 state.
