they are anti-religion and the religious influence in this country Paganism died out when Christianity became the religion of Rome. These people aren't that kind of Pagan. The old Pagans were highly religious. So what are these people really? History buffs?

The modern "Pagans" I've heard about and talked to are actually quite religious--in the caferteria-style-as-long-as-its-not-Christian forms of New Age worship. Some are actually neo-Pagans--attempting to ressurect the old pre-Christian European religions (mixed with anything they want from other non-Christian or non-Jewish sources.)
Basically a bunch of very mixed up people--some old hippies that took the age of Aquarius seriously, and most folks their kids' age (or grandkids) who wish they could be hippies now....dying for something as urgent as the Vietnam war to protest.

They're Pantheists.
And, post-EPA, Pantheism is now the feral-gummint-established and officially sanctioned and promoted religion of the United States.

No, unfortunately, paganism did not die out. And there is a resurgence of it today. The Neo-pagans have web sites and are trying to organize. They are encouraging disenchanted Christians to give them a try. This is actually pretty serious stuff.
