You have been trigger happy on occasion, but I can't think of one poster in my tenure here that you have banned that had a real expertise on a subject that they shared with the rest of us in a helpful and educative manner. A couple of the very best have seemingly departed perhaps because in their field of expertise there was not a sufficient critical mass with whom to dialogue that continued to interest them. That is one key. Try to maintain a critical mass on various topics who really have some knowledge with which to stimulate the rest of us. Absent that, and the place will become a chat room.
