WASHINGTON - Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-N.Y., announced Friday she is co-sponsoring a bill to give domestic partners of federal employees, whether of the same or opposite sex, the same benefits as federal employees' legal spouses - including health insurance. "Longtime domestic partners should enjoy the same benefits afforded other couples, whether it's health insurance, inheritance, property rights or taxes. These are Americans who have made a commitment to one another, and they should not be denied benefits," Clinton said.
The original sponsors are Rep. Barney Frank, D-Mass., and Sen. Mark Dayton, D-Minn.
"At a time when there is a substantial salary gap between government and private-sector employees with similar jobs, it simply makes sense to add a low-cost benefit to help attract more qualified people to the federal government, and make it easier to retain them once they start work," Frank said.
"It is fundamentally wrong that domestic partners of gay, lesbian, and heterosexual federal employees are excluded from receiving the benefits available to opposite-sex spouses," Dayton said.
Clinton also is co-sponsoring the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, which would make it illegal to deny any citizen an education, a job, a home, immigration or any other opportunity because of his or her sexual orientation.

Bears repeating, bump! How is this managed, anyway?
Aside from religious reasons, there's nothing left.
If all goes according to her plans, she will be the next President of the USA.
So far she seems unstoppable.
And also because, in a week that she clearly has nothing else to do but run around and sign books to line her pockets with cash, the only government business she tends to is crap like this.
Neither of them lived with him. The only "domestic" aspect to those affairs was the damage he did.

President Bush has signed a bill allowing death benefits to be paid to the domestic partners of firefighters and police officers who die in the line of duty, permanently extending a federal death benefit to "same-sex couples" for the first time.
The new law allows a $250,000 federal benefit for survivors of public safety officers to be paid to any beneficiary listed on the victim's life insurance policy. The money has been available only to spouses, children and parents.
