White House Backs Latest Israeli Attacks
Focus Shifts to Arab Leaders' Commitment to End Support for Militant Groups

By Glenn Kessler
Washington Post Staff Writer
Friday, June 13, 2003; Page A22

The Bush administration signaled strong support for Israel's crackdown on militant groups yesterday, effectively abandoning its earlier criticism of the government of
Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon that had sparked an outcry from lawmakers on Capitol Hill and pro-Israel lobbying groups.

In coordinated statements, White House and State Department officials tried to shift the diplomatic focus from Israeli actions to the commitment made by Arab
leaders at a summit last week in Egypt to cut off funding and support for terrorist attacks against Israelis. Secretary of State Colin L. Powell made that point in a
round of phone calls to Arab foreign ministers, officials said.

The plan being to show everyone, everywhere, who was undermining the peace process. To expose the euroweenies for the terrorist supporters they are, to take out Iraq, to put Syria on notice, to make sure that the Arab states were on public record against terrorism. This thing didn't materialize overnight. Who didn't know that the terrorists would continue bombing? Who didn't know that they would behave in exactly the same way they have been behaving for years? Who didn't know that Bush means what he says and says what he means? When he said he was going to fight terrorism, who was dumb enough to believe he would exclude Hamas, Hizbollah, and all the rest?

I'll tell you who. About half the posters on this forum.

You have no idea whether I'm wrong or not; you could be just as wrong as you claim I am. You're talking to people just like I am. Being an ardent Bush supporter has nothing to do with it.

Draw whatever conclusions you need to further your views; just try to stop acting like the rest of us are dopes because we don't see it like you do.

>>>What I have been saying all along was that Israel had every right to defend themselves. You objected to that. Well now Bush agrees.

I never said anything of the sort. So stop putting words in my mouth. And Bush isn't agreeing with you, Bush is making the policy!

>>>All week you have been arguing that Sharon should not have joined the peace proces if he didn't mean to comply.

Exactly. The purpose of the meeting last week with PresBush, Abu Mazen and PM Sharon was to reach an agreement that would end hostilities and bring about a cease fire. That's what PresBush wanted from that first meeting. That obviously didn't happen. PresBush in no undercertain words, condemned the homicide bombings that killed innocent Israeli's and blasted Sharon and Israel for the retaliation that killed innocent people in the Gaza Strip.

>>>Good Lord, go to the Breaking News column and you'll find two or three articles there that state that Bush is now advocating a crack-down on Hamas.

That doesn't mean Bush has exonerated Sharon and Israel. Give me a break. These are fast changing sets of circumstances and the Bush adminstration has now determined that a cutting off financial add to Hamas is a priority and pressing that terrorist group, through other Arab nations is the right way to go. But things are highly fluid. You've got to pay attention.

>>>My emphasis has not been the Road Map...

That's obvious. My emphasis has always been on the Road Map For Peace all along. I've been on the Bush peace express from the beginning. You've just seen the light and now you're jumping onboard the Bush peace express too.

>>>.... you have demanded that Sharon cease his efforts to take out Hamas leaders.

Wrong. I never said that. I said that killing innocent people is wrong and I agreed with PresBush for condemning those excessive attacks in the Gaza strip and the homicide bombings.

>>> I stated that Sharon has a right to defend his nation.

I said the same thing. The issue here is, you didn't support the Bush peace plan at the time, I did and still support the Bush peace plan.

>>>I did however ask you to please mention one tangible thing Abu Mazen had done. You failed to respond.

Either your memory is bad, or you're lying. There's no third alternative.

Here's what you asked me and what I responded with.

>>>What one single thing can you point out that Abu Mazen did, that is tangible at this point? Please, name just one.

Abu Mazen/Mahmoud Abbas hasn't done a thing. Now show me where I made a statement that says anything to the contrary? You can't. Another foolish statement by you!

I can't go on with this any longer. You're still a liar, a phony and a fool. On top of all that, you're a fraud too. I've had enough of your nonsense, once again.

Why do you suppose the change in stated policy came late this week, the same week that he earlier publicly busted Israe'l's chops again?

The plan has morphed.  The news is clear, the speaches by Bush, Powell and Annan unmistakable.  Newspapers are heralding it.  So are Freepers far and wide.  The peace process could not continue until military action was taken against the terrorists without undercutting Israel every step of the way.  Finally, unable to deny it any longer, policy was shifted toward one that would see peace persued while military action took place.  For the first time in thirty years, the United States has kept it's fat yap shut when Israel defended itself.  Neutrality died today.  Thank the Lord.

This is not acknowledged as a change in policy.  It is merely the perfect plan of a perfect man who never made a mistake in his life, and for about five more years won't according to some.  Who didn't know that military action would have to be taken by Israel?  Well about half the people on this thread didn't.  Who didn't know that Bush doesn't always know what he should, or do what he should have eighteen months ago?  When he said he was going to fight terrorism, it was ludacrist for him not to call the premier terrorist on the planet by this title, but he wouldn't.  When he said he was going to fight terrorism, who was dumb enough not to think he should have taken out Hamas, Hizbollah and all the rest from the start?  Well, the diciples, that's who.

Making points at others expense is fun.

Well, Good evening Todd, I see you have showed up to cut and paste your usual clippings from the WP and/or the NYT's. You, like the the NYT's and WP, can't see the forrest for the tree's. One public statement is made against the actions of Sharon and you and the rest of the weakest links cry foul.

The fact is Todd, you wouldn't know the truth if it bit you in your uninformed arse

Because Sharon jumped the gun. He struck before the serious attack that everyone knew would come. The one that no one in their right mind could keep Sharon from responding to.

>>>What I see that you don't see -- or don't want to -- is that he couldn't come right out the very first day and say KILL THEM ALL -- we have to at least LOOK like we're trying to do it by the book for the consumption of the rest of the world.

I basically told him that the other day Howlin, twice, but he didn't want to hear it. Let's take a look back.

"The fact PresBush condemns Israel for comitting this specific attack, is important to keep his appearence of being an honest broker in the ME."

...and ...

Bush has presented what is being called a "Road Map to Peace", so he would look pretty foolish, if he didn't try and appear to be the honest broker, he says he is.

Howlin, I don't think it is out of line for me to hold the opinion I do.  That opinion is now shared by papers who are ardently against Israel and it's taking military action, so I think it's safe to say they woudn't spin this against their own desires unless they thought it were true.

You have expressed your opinion.  I have expressed mine.  I'm sorry if that offends you.

Draw whatever conclusions you need to further your views; just try to stop acting like the rest of us are dopes because we don't see it like you do.

I guess you weren't quite savy enough to see the ridicule flying around this thread, as if nobody would notice.  You have a lot of nerve taking me to task for belittling anyone.
