G'nite, Chet. G'nite, David.

Huntley was the smart one.

Okay he wasn't just a geek. I'd forgotten how funny Brinkley could be even if it was way over Peter's head.

From Election Night 1996 -

Brinkley: "I wish to say that we all look forward with great pleasure to four years of wonderful, inspiring speeches full of wit, poetry, music, love and affection. More goddamn nonsense."

Peter Jennings: "You can't say that on the air, Mr. Brinkley."

I remember this exchange, it still makes me laugh out loud even today.

I used to love his little remarks at the end of the This Week show, especially:

This can only happen in Washington DC. A parking ticket cop is checking cars. A thief is stealing the plates off of the car in front of the officer. After the thief gets the plates, the officer writes a ticket fo not having any license plates and places it on the car.

We all look forward with great pleasure to four years of wonderful, inspiring speeches, full of wit, poetry, music, love and affection plus more goddamn nonsense." ABC'S DAVID BRINKLEY, commenting on Clinton's postmidnight acceptance speech

That one comment, even though it was not meant to be heard on the air, earned Mr. Brinkley my respect. He knew one when he saw one and didn't seem to mind calling it as he saw it.

Memories are short, or most folks here are just too young to remember. Both Huntley and Brinkley were liberals, Huntley a little less so.

Probably the first political book I read (other than "Conscience of a Conservative") was "Advise and Consent" (Allen Drury) circa 1960. He had a talking head newsman character named "Frankly Unctuous" whom I always felt was modeled on Brinkley -- and the start of the pernicious liberal slant of the broadcast news. Glad to see Brinkley turn to the right, somewhat, in his latter years, especially that slam at Clinton in 1996. He was dead on target with that one.

Brinkley called Clinton's Tuesday night speech after winning the election "one of the worst things I've ever heard.'' He said the speech was "totally unnecessary.''

The commentator praised his ABC colleagues for their creativity and said it was not a quality shared by the president.

"He has not a creative bone in his body,'' Brinkley said. "Therefore, he's a bore, and will always be a bore".

At least Brinkley gave George Will the respect he deserved on "This Week". That punk Stephie, the witch Pukie Roberts, and the phony Donaldson all think they are superior to Will.....and all three of their intellects combined can't equal Will's wisdom.

T least Brinkley gave George Will the respect he deserved on "This Week" and never interrupted him. That boy Stephie, Pukie Roberts, and Stupid Sam all thought they were better than George and constantly talked over him, interrupted him, spoke down to him, etc.

George Will should go to Fox.

I'm not sure what the set up was but pre recording on the old 2" highband video was being done back then. It may have been that for the week or two he was doing convention commentary they ran tape. I just don't remember...I was 26 at the time and easily distracted...

Can you imagine David and Gregory Peck are in the same spiritual orientation, waiting for further instictions on how to adapt to the new surrounding?

I would like to see a play written about Icons who meet in the great beyond. What would be their thoughts and exchanges of life on earth!:)
