I guess I'm going to have to make a trip to Israel so I can better understand the problem. Why do they not seal the border? Why is anyone allowed to cross into Israel by land? Ever?

What's the difference between an orthodox Jew and an ultra-orthadox Jew? Height?

apparently he's more Jewish than the other guy, at least according to the obviously anti-Semetic author of the piece.

How many hareidim are security police? Meshizahav (from ZAKA) has been trying to recruit hareidi police officers.

DONATE TO ZAKA

Bush told Israel to open up the crossings for more Arabs, as a "confidence building measure"

why doesn't the IDF just bomb the fuck out of the palestinians and be gone. Enough of this. Get rid of them once and for all.

Israel can do all this. But the US would never allow it.

Israel should just do it, without the U.S. approval. But do a majority of Israelis have the stomach to do it? I have not noticed a groundswell of rioting by angry Israeli mobs that would signal a change of heart and resolution to destroy the rats nest -- they appear as placid as ever.

I love Bush, I really do, but his "roadmap" is doomed to failure. The only real roadmap starts with the annihilation of Hamas. Bush understands that where the US is concerned, he had neither time nor patience with any "roadmap" that left Saddam in power, but somehow he thinks the Palestinian cause is different.

I can see the Israelis giving a little ground in the interest of educating Bush, but he must see that there will be no peace while Hamas walks the earth. The idea that the new Palestinian government will go after the terrorists themselves is a fool's dream. An independent Palestinian government has no chance in opposition to the terrorists, while they live; they must either collaborate with the terrs, or be marginalized and ignored by them, even destroyed by them. If Bush wants an independent PA government, he must recognize that Hamas is the declared enemy of it, and will not allow it to function at all, ever.

Step one to settling the West Bank and Gaza issue is to destroy Hamas.

Probably a cheap labor addiction, just like the USA. Gotta keep those wages down...at what cost?

"Ultra" is not a correct term, but in general it means Charedi or "black hat Orthodox". That is, wearing a distinctive outfit and not just a yarmulke.

Would it be correct to call people in that distinct outfit "hasidim" or is that too specific?

Yes. Nor is it one specific outfit. "Ultra" is a disparaging term for Charedi. Not all Charedi are Hassidim, and the outfits vary between groups, especially the particular hat. Otherwise very similar, especially to those who are not used to seeing them.

There's nothing religiously "carved in stone" about these outfits, except that they are modest and customary.

There are some rules about what is permissible in general. For example, a Charedi doing farm work will have his head covered, be wearing fringes, etc, but otherwise be dressed as any other farmer, at least while at work.

For example, the Lubavicher Hasidim customarily wear black fedoras rather than the original flat Amish-like hats because the late rabbi fancied them.

Other groups wear bowlers, fur hats, etc, for similar reasons.

When some other kind of Hassid becomes a Lubavitcher (typically though marriage), he will continue to "wear his father's hat". It's not like religious conversion.
