Where else can you go to work for 6 hours a day, for 9 months a year, and make a decent living. Plus gubmint benefits too.

Perhaps conditions in my state (Texas) are different than those in your state. Where do you live that teachers work only 6 hours/day? Also, what are the "gubmont benefits" that you speak of? I may consider moving to your state (or not).

Not to mention the scumbag teachers unions that will never let a community get rid of the scumbag drunk old hag bitchy, useless chaff teachers.
(I apologize to Mrs. Kidess if my grammar sucks.)

There were some recent job actions here in Maryland where some teachers worked according to their contract; this ticked a lot of parents off who had come to expect that the teachers would come early and stay late to provide what amounted to non-contract tutoring. And most of the teachers had been doing just that.

Counting the time they put in at home and after school, the teachers I know put in at least 10 hours a day. And many of them go to school during the summers.
I'd wager you'll find that to be the case for most teachers.

Amen! I'm out here in Longmont, Colorado where the school district BLEW 15 million bucks due to mismanagement and had the gall to call for a referendum to increase taxes to give the teachers a payraise. The two teachers who live next door to me were all for it. Both of them bought a NEW Jeep this year PLUS a used Jeep for their son. We live in a nice neighborhood where the houses run from $250,000 - $500,000 so they're doing ok. Hubby also bought a Harley to scoot around on. They pay NO medical premiums either. They are off three months of the year and have TOO MANY long holidays. I just can't believe these people were bitching about their pay raise like we owed it to them.

Hey, if it's such a great Job, I don't see many Freepers lining up to do it.

Sorry...but no good teacher works those hours. Most go from 7am to 4pm, and work about 3 weeks longer per year than the students actually attend school.

"Where else can you go to work for 6 hours a day, for 9 months a year, and make a decent living." You forgot about extra days off (or delays) for fog, snow, etc. In some districts this may account for an additional 15 days of vacation per (school) year.
On the other hand, don't forget that teachers do work closer to 8 or 9 hours per day, given the planning and grading involved post-school day (still, no one can argue effectively one truth: teachers generally have 10 to 12 weeks off during the summer).
Just trying to be fair to the teachers...

I am contracted to work 196 days per year and I work 7.5 hours a day, with a 23 minute lunch. I've been teaching 20 years and I have a Master's degree. I make around 52,ooo a year with weekends and most holidays off. The 8 weeks in the summer I vacation, work part-time and lounge around my cement pond. It's a great job if you do it right. One of the few jobs with a pension.

The teachers in our district work at least 10 1/2 months. My son's teacher is there by 7am and leaves at 4pm. That's a little more than 6 hours a day.
The one thing that I'll complain about is that my son's teacher is a new teacher, and she is on the cutting board for next year because she is brand new.
There are other teacher's that need to leave, but they have tenure. Thanks to the union rules the new teachers will be laid off, and not the old ones. It is not based on who is the best teacher. My son's teacher has been excellent!!!

In TX teachers have 8 hours a day, 10 months a year, and go to school in the summer. I think they have part of their health insurance paid; not sure. And most I know take work home and are expected to be back at night when they're told for parent meetings.
We have plenty of openings if you're qualified and think it's a good deal.
