THE BOGUS DAVIS RECALL PETITION EXISTS! (I know because I caught one)
A PERSONAL EXPERIENCE!

When I first heard that there was a bogus recall petition being circulated in an effort to confuse and derail the Davis Recall effort, I thought that this was merely a story being circulated by Conservatives to light a fire under the butts of people wishing Gray Davis could be taken out of office. It just seemed way too odd to me that people would actually commit election fraud in an effort to stop the movement.
That all changed today when I stopped at a Target in Irvine, CA and saw a petition table for the Recall. I decided to read the small print before I signed.
AND IT WAS A BOGUS PETITION! It first started with official enough looking language with the header RECALL PETITION. But when you got to the second paragraph of the Petition language, the petition stated that the recall movement was a waste of time and resources and a right wing attempt to get rid of the rightfully elected governor!
I was astounded. When I pointed out to the collector that he and his group was violating state election laws, he became combative. I told him I was merely pointing out he was participating in perpetrating a fraud on voters and that I was going to call the store manager to have a look for himself.
Guys, he got out of there faster than a human shield out of Baghdad before the war!
So, in the end, the bogus recall effort DOES EXIST!

Next time offer him $10 for a blank copy off his clipboard. Bet the slime takes the $10 and gives you one.

What keeps them from downloading the "real" petitions, sitting at their tables getting signatures, and then just discarding them. This will be just as effective but harder to control.

Good point. We must all be rather Vigilant.
For as Hugh Hewitt would say "just when you think Democrats have reached the basement in behavior, they dig a deeper hole."

I don't want him recalled. I want him to have his feet held to the fire for the rest of his term; changing the governor will not change the state senate and assembly, so net result would be zero.
I still think Davis should stay right where he is, stewing in his own juices while our state's problems continue to mount....under a DEMOCRAT administration. Only then will the pendulum swing in our direction.
We all know how the media would twist things if a Republican should (miraculously) replace him due to a recall.....it would be the "Schwartzenneger Budget deficit".

The official recall petition contains this?
The answer of the officer sought to be recalled is as follows: IF YOU SIGN THIS PETITION, IT MAY LEAD TO A SPECIAL ELECTION THIS SUMMER COSTING US TAXPAYERS AN ADDITIONAL $20-40 MILLION. Last November, almost 8,000,000 Californians went to the polls. They voted to elect Governor Davis to another term. Just days after the Governors inauguration in January, however, a handful of rightwing politicians are attempting to overturn the voters decision. They couldnt beat him fair and square, so now theyre trying another trick to remove him from office. This effort is being led by the former Chairman of the State Republican Party, who was censured by his own party. We should not waste scarce taxpayers dollars on sour grapes. The time for partisanship and campaigning is past. Its time for both parties to work together on our States problems. Moreover, the allegations leveled against the Governor are false. As Governor, Davis has vetoed almost $9 BILLION in spending. California, along with 37 other states, is facing a budget deficit due to the bad national economy. The Bush Administration has announced the federal deficit this year will be the biggest in history, $304 BILLION. In these difficult and dangerous times, LETS WORK TOGETHER, not be diverted by partisan mischief. /s/ Gray Davis Governor Gray Davis 9911 W. Pico Boulevard, Suite 980 Los Angeles, CA 90035
Why on earth does California law allow this kind of crap on a recall petition?

Just look at the bottom of the petition.
Every genuine petition will have:
RETURN PETITIONS TO PROPONENT: TED COSTA, 3407 ARDEN WAY, SACRAMENTO, CA 95825, DAVISRECALL.com, (800)501-8222

If my impression of CA law is correct, it probably requires the petition contain a statement from the person being recalled... I wouldn't put it past them anyway, remember Dems have controlled that state for years.

There was a woman collecting signatures at a Fry Electronics today and she said that they have over 700,000 signatures so far!
The store was in a high democrat area but the few minutes that I was there waiting for merchandise she was getting a signature about every minute or less.

Perhaps so, but the defense of Davis is three times longer than the stated reasons for the recall on that form. Very strange.

The Secretary of State approved Costa's petition to recall Davis, including Davis' response. I guess the petition is simple enough that the response is longer, but it probably has to be there as an opposing viewpoint. Funny how Davis refers to himself in the 3rd person.

What keeps them from downloading the "real" petitions, sitting at their tables getting signatures, and then just discarding them. This will be just as effective but harder to control. Actually, it should be even more effective (for Davis) because signers will know they signed the real petition and will avoid signing one again. Unlike voter registration, there's probably no time limit for the signature collectors to keep the signatures. On the other hand, it will look like even more people are enthusiastic about removing Davis.

Take the petition straight to the police, after making a copy and sending it to the local news channels and posting it to FR!
