June 10, 2003 -- A Navy veteran who shot a burglar as the crook crept into his toddler's bedroom has dodged a possible three- month prison sentence for criminal possession of a weapon by coming clean with prosecutors.

Ronald Dixon, 27, flashed a broad grin yes terday after pleading guilty to a reduced charge of disorderly conduct, a violation that will send him to Rikers Island for just three days, in a deal with Brooklyn DA Charles Hynes.

Asked what he would change if he could to turn back the clock to that fateful night when he wounded Thompson, Dixon said: "I'd make sure I had a license first."

Which would be practically impossible in NYC.

Tell you what I'd change, the location of those two wounds would be head and chest, not necessarily in that order.

To get the reduced sentence, Dixon, who works a second job on the weekend to support his family, had to acknowledge his wrongdoing, document where he got the gun and prove that he had taken steps to register it.

Once he does that,will his weapon be returned to him? If not, he will be an easy mark for the perp's "friends" to carry out revenge on this honest citizen.

This stinks. He should have gotten a medal, not jail time.

I agree. At least its a misdemeanor and not a felony. It won't cost him his job. I don't think a jury would have convicted him and D.A Hynes knew he didn't have a case he could win, not after 9-11 so he cut a deal. If I were the guy's attorney, short of an acquittal, this was the best he could get.

I still fail to see where he did anything wrong.

Does he have to admit that it was "wrong" to shoot the home invader, or just "wrong" that his gun registration was delayed?

Either way, even though it is just a misdemeanor, this whole episode is wrong.

He shouldn't serve any jail time period.

And Riker's Island? I thought that place was for hardened criminals, which this man is definitely NOT!

This latest deal leaves him with a clean record, which Dixon was very concerned about. He is Jamaican and was worried about losing his residency. So at least this Navy vet doesn't have to worry now about being deported. That may have been a factor in accepting the deal.

But it still STINKS. I hope Charles Hynes develops festering boils that never go away...

I hope he's just saying this for public consumption. The man's toddler might not have a father today if he'd waited to get a license first.

Actually, this is good news. It propably would have been much worse except for the pressure that was brought against the prosecutor by the media and the good people here at FR.
