A SELF-proclaimed vampire on trial for rape was ambushed by two men and shot dead as he left his home in Melbourne's north this morning.
Male prostitute Shane Chartres-Abbott, 28, was part-way through a trial in the Victorian County Court on charges he raped and attacked a client after allegedly telling her he was a vampire who drank blood in order to survive.
Chartres-Abbott was shot dead as he left his house in Howard Street, Reservoir, with his girlfriend and an elderly man about 8.45am (AEST) this morning.
A spokeswoman for the County Court said the trial had been aborted and the jury discharged because of Chartres-Abbott's murder.
The court heard last week Chartres-Abbott's female victim was found unconscious, bloodied and naked in the shower of a hotel room with part of her tongue ripped out and teethmarks on her thigh.
His defence solicitor told the court Chartres-Abbott was being groomed for a role in a "snuff movie" in which he would have been killed.
Senior Sergeant Clive Rust told reporters at the scene of this morning's shooting that police believed Chartres-Abbott was ambushed.
"Obviously they were laying in wait for him and the shooting has resulted," he told reporters at the scene, adding a motive was yet to be established.
"It does surprise me, obviously it appears to be a planned attack and yes, quite vicious."
Police were unsure if both of the men involved in the killing were armed.
Chartres-Abbott died instantly from a gunshot wound to the upper body.
The elderly man received minor injuries, but was not shot and did not require hospital treatment. The victim's girlfriend was unhurt.
The police air wing, the dog squad and uniformed police scoured the area for the offenders without result.
"We're trying to identify any other witnesses at this point in time," Sen Sgt Rust said.
"We are doing a doorknock, house to house, speaking to whoever we can locate to try and identify if there were other people who either saw the incident or the offenders leaving the scene."
Sen Sgt Rust said it was not known whether the two men were known to the victim.
The men are described as thin to medium build. One was wearing a beanie and a scarf and the other man had a jumper pulled over his face.
Impossible!!!! When they pass a law banning guns, guns are banned!!!
