The Penn Is Mightier . . . (NY Times: "You Go, Sean Penn")

Good thing for Sean Penn that Americans already have a pretty certain image of him. Because if you weren't reading closely, you might easily have taken the actor's recent full-page, four-thousand-plus-word advertorial in the New York Times as the work of one more CEO who feels unfairly maligned by a biased press.

Plainly Mr. Penn believed his views were not being heard, or at least not the way he wanted them heard. He is therefore fortunate enough to live in a land where the market gives him an opportunity he would not otherwise have to broadcast his message. That's as timely a reminder as any that commercial speech is no less crucial to the First Amendment than any other. In this case, Mr. Penn's medium was more important than his message.

And so is my right to ignore the dimwit and his supporters.

Sean Penn has read Orwell's 1984?

Color me doubtful.

Hmm. So even though according to this article "Penn admitted to using marijuana 20 years ago and had a couple of arrests for assault and driving recklessly, factors that could have disqualified him for a permit for carrying a concealed weapon", he is able to get a permit in a county that is very stingy with them. But now he's the being kept down by the man. Boo hoo.

Connery: "You know, you're sitting on a goldmine there."

Trebek: "For the last time Mr. Connery, it is 'the pen is mightier", not "the penis mightier'."

Read the article. It is surprisingly honest, brutal in parts. But see here what even SEAN PENN realized...

"What's new is this tiny seed and taste of freedom. "It is a compelling experience to have been in Baghdad just one year ago, where not a single Iraqi expressed to me opinions outside Baathist party lines, and just one year later, when so many express their opinions and so many opinions compete for attention."

I may even go see one of his movies --- if he's learned how to act yet! ;>)
