How does this work -

does a woman have to have a kid in order to breast feed? and how long does it last? does it turn off one day?

Within a few days after having a baby, a woman should start to produce milk (barring post-birth complications). It's a "use it or lose it" deal, the more a mom nurses, the more milk she makes When she quits breastfeeding, they dry up :-)

Usually she does have to have a kid to breastfeed. Breastmilk works with supply meeting demand. The less you nurse, the less milk you have, the more you nurse, the more milk you have. Once you wean the child the milk dries up. (the first 6wks of breastfeeding and the last few weeks of it usually hurt pretty bad) The lady at the daycare most likely had a child of her own that she was still breastfeeding. Or she could've just let it suckle for comfort without getting any milk. Either way, she should've had permission from the mother to do it.
