YOU tell me if my local news is biased.
KTUL ^

Posted on 06/03/2003 5:20:45 AM PDT by ConservativeMan55

These are two stories that my local news led off with yesterday morning and this morning.

"Governor Brad Henry has had a string of successes. Newschannel 8 has found that Henry has accomplished everything he said he would. A lottery, Economic Reform, Getting elected, and farmers reform."

Then this mornings headline....

"A new report out says that the Coalitions push for war may have been unfounded. Inspectors final reports say that there are no weapons of mass destruction in Iraq."

Later the second headline was revealed not to be 'new' but to be the report that Hans Blix issued before he was forced to leave because of the war.

Maybe if you offered to buy them a water cooler it would help? Sounds like everyone is drinking Kool-Aid over there ;-)

Newspaper headlines and TV and radio "teasers" are the largest source of bias that I see. Most people don't read entire newspaper articles and get bored quickly with terlevision and radio news stories. Short little "blurbs" are often very misleading and nobody challenges them for accuracy as nobody is really responsible for them.

Of course it it biased. Your paper is very similar to the rag in our town, that is why I cancelled my subscription 10 years ago. I will not support the promotion of leftist views with my subscrition money.
Hopefully, the news yesterday of changes at the FCC will make for changes in the political views of all forms of media, including newspapers.

Speaking of bias. Coming from Southwest Oklahoma, I was watching the 6 PM News on KSWO-TV yesterday and they did a story on the new FCC regulations which seemed a bit one-sided.

They had someone from the local NPR radio station and the owner of the Lawton Constitution giving sides against it but there was never any side for it that was interviewed.

This whole issue is about popularity not about ownership as some would like you to think. I'm one of over 50 million people who listen to conservative talk radio and there are some in Congress who don't seem to like my choices and the fact that conservatism is winning out over their ideas in the marketplace.

And so what they're seeking to do is to use the goverment to abridge the rights of broadcasters to give the people what they want.

Of course people do have a right to speak out but they don't have a right to be heard. The Constitution does not obligate us conservatives to stop and listen every lunatic liberal or progressive on the radio on the street just because they demand it.

Clearly, some local news media outlets are not doing what they're supposed to which is to give everyone the whole story on issues of pulbic importance and a tremendous disservice is being done because of it.
Regards.

Our local newspaper is the Tulsa World. It's very liberal too. They sell outside Sams sometimes, trying to give away a free copy. I really enjoy telling them how I don't want one of those liberal papers, not even for free.

I can't help it if I have a very loud voice, I'm hard of hearing.

Yes. Here's a partial anlysis.

"Governor Brad Henry has had a string of successes. Newschannel 8 has found that Henry has accomplished everything he said he would. A lottery, Economic Reform, Getting elected, and farmers reform."

Success is a term used to indicate a positive result. If the result is positive, the paper must agree that what he did is a good thing -- in this case, fulfilling his campaign promise to create a lottery, to create economic reform, getting elected and farmer's reform.

The term "everything" is usually used as a term of praise, because it's rare for any candidate to achieve everything he or she has promised. (My old creative writing teacher called words such as these "glittering generalities".) In this case, it's used almost sure falsely -- if there is one thing he promised but did not do, then the statement must be false.

Finally, the terms "reform" indicate a positive improvement. An even-handed report would state what bills had been passed and what they would do, not merely sum up change as "reform".

On top of all that, there are also multiple grammar problems ("farmer's reform"? What, is he counselling farmers?)

You are absolutley right.

That is why USAToday and CNN Headline News were so popular and so bad for the nation. Politics and news should not be sound bites but rather rational and complete thougths.

LOL!

I know exactly what you mean. I love telling them the same thing, and I must be hard of hearing too. 8^)

I also let major advertisers know that I didn't see their ad and why. It is fun to call a business that is advertising a big sale in the paper and ask them when they are expecting their next sale. When I'm told that there is a big ad in the paper, I get a great opportunity to tell them that I didn't see it and why.

I hope that I am making a little dent in the leftist propoganda in this town.

Without knowing where you're located nor what paper you read, I'm inclined to answer "Yes, your local paper is biased."

I'd even go so far as to guess that it has a LIBERAL bias!

Fortunately, there's FreeRepublic.

Predictions are what they are...But I predict Henry will go down as one of the worst OK. gov's in the history of the state. And that is saying alot..!! Ha!!

I wouldn't be a bit surprised if he wasn't illegally tangled up with gambling interests in and out of this state.

Course I ain't a lawyer Jacoby and according to gov'ner Henry that makes me unable to understand complicated stuff..LOL!! The guy's a moroon...but the Tulsa Libworld will provide cover until the cows come home. I wouldn't even clean fish on the Libworld...might come up stinking like Rats.

Yes your local news is biased to the Left. Of course, 99.9% of local news has a liberal bias.

I'm still a bit in favor of the FCC change although I am no fan of Clear Channel (in music or politics). Trust me they aren't 100% for conservatism like everyone thinks. They canned the staff at their top draw AM station to put in some new dogs that were all bark and no bite. The old staff grabbed up one of the stations that CC had to dump (because of restrictions) and remained on the air; Dan Patrick opposes the decision because he saw first hand how some within CC could push their own agenda even at the expense of the company bottom line.

That said, I don't see a difference between the people who own the Chicago Tribune (and a bunch of other papers) owning NBC Channel 2 news in Houston (which it does now) and someone here owning it (Hearst owns the Houston Comical). Maybe this decision is what it will take to get a second daily paper in this town (since most papers are nationally owned now as are tv stations). There wasn't this block on radio ownership and tv ownership. And look at the media beomoths of Viacom(radio-CBS-MTV-NICK...) and ABC-Disney-AOL-Time-Warner-CNN.

Where were all of the people on the left protesting those mergers? NPR? Pacifica? Why are they protesting corporate takeovers when they reside on commercial free (but TAX PAYER FUNDED) left wing radio stations? They aren't at risk (and by their 501c3 funding, they aren't permitted to spin nothing but left wing politics and candidates but they do it anyway).

Point well taken.

I might add though that a lot of the decisions being made at some Clear Channel radio stations are actully coming from the management and not neccessarily from the corporate higher ups. Unless I'm istaken, I think Clear Channel is sort of a hands off outfit that leaves a lot of the programming decisions to the stations managers.:-D
