Bylines, Datelines and Fault Lines at The N.Y. Times

How did one of the world's greatest newspapers wind up in a civil war?

After being rocked by the serial fabrications of Jayson Blair and the controversial assisted reporting of Rick Bragg, the New York Times has been struggling to repair the damage. But the wounds are far deeper than immediately apparent, in part because of long-simmering resentment over Executive Editor Howell Raines's bruising management style -- and a bureaucratic structure that protected the likes of Blair and Bragg, though their conduct was vastly different.

As the newsroom meltdown played out in the press, Raines and his management team hunkered down and granted no interviews, frustrating many reporters who believe no one is defending the reputation of the vast majority of staffers who work hard and adhere to high standards. Some feel betrayed -- "the whole place is in total rebellion," says one veteran -- and say they have lost confidence in Raines.

Ahhh, nice to see the Washington Post twist the knife in a liberal organization, for a change.

I'm really not certain- it depends on how serious the damage to the NYT actually is- if the Times takes a permanent hit in credibility, he may go, but since lying is de riguer for the Left, the Times, and most people who believe in the Times, this may blow over.

Excuse the cut and paste, but to show you there is a real man behind my screen name, here's a link & commentary to my first-ever web photos:

Let's see what I can do--

By way of explanation, I am absolutely a tyro at this- did film photography for decades, including a little 16mm cine work, but this is the first web-based set of photos I have ever put out... my brother-in-law owns Glynn Camera
( yes, he has a website )
and he just digitized these for me... they are captioned; the top three are our "kids," followed by a sequence of me in a "special weapons & tactics" demo, a poster I did many years ago, and me & my wife.

(... and as a footnote to all those trolls, disruptors, & DU/Bartcop types out there, the weapon shown was legally manufactured by a licensed Title II manufacturer, it is registered, taxes paid, etc. Get over it. )

The consensus is slowly shifting. The New York Times, once indisputably "one of the world's great newspapers," has fallen from that eminence due to relentless opinion-mongering presented as news and more than a little deceit and fabrication in place of journalism.

It's the end of an era. In some ways that's sad; when the Times was trustworthy -- meaning that it distinguished rigidly between reporting and opinion, and policed its writers adequately -- it really was a good read and a terrific source of news. But it's not sad that an organ that inherited the patina of those days, but did not deserve to retain it, should be relegated to the back benches of American journalism.
