Bush refuses to declare that Israel is a Jewish state [at the summit] (Freeper Translation)
Maariv Israeli Newspaper ^ | June 3, 2003 | Sahar and Hogi

Posted on 06/02/2003 9:50:04 PM PDT by yonif

Translation from Hebrew to English by me of the first section talking about this refusal:

From signals that have arrived in the last few days to the state level in Israel it is found that President Bush does not intend to declare during the summit in Aghaba that the State of Israel is "the state of the Jewish people."

Israel asked the Americans to include in Bush's speech the notion of the existance of Israel as a Jewish state, to make it clear that the Americans do not recognize the Right of Return of the Palestinians, however it was Palestinian pressue that caused the Americans to go back from making that planned declaration.

Israel was surprised from the American refusal, due to the fact in Bush's speech in the University of Southern Carolina in the beginning of last month, the President declared that Israel is a Jewish state. State (Israeli) officials noted yesterday that in closed meetings with the American ambassador in Israel Dan Kurtzer and the American envoys to the area, Eliot Abrams and Bill Burns, the three came back and made clear that the US made clear to the Arab world that there is no right of return, and the American position in the issue is known. This is why in Israel they do not understand why this time Bush refused to make this known position again.

Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom met yesterday with the Prime Minister, and underlined that it is necessary to continue to ask the Americans to include the issue of Israel's existance as a Jewish state in his speech. Sharon and Shalom have decided to add to the Israeli declaration the fact that Israel is a Jewish state and it will continue to be one.

From Israel National News

‘Bush Must Include Right of Israel to Exist as Jewish State in Summary Statement’ (IsraelNN.com) Ahead of tomorrow’s Aqaba Summit, Prime Minister Ariel Sharon will hold consultations with Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz and with Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom, Israel Radio reports.

Foreign Minister Shalom said Israel has to urge the U.S. to include in President Bush’s summary statement the right of Israel to exist as a Jewish state. If this does not happen, Shalom said, Sharon would include it in his remarks at the end of the summit.

Where are we going with this? Just how far will Bush appease Arab terrorists like Abbas to enhance his re-election prospects? (I am tired of blaming Karl Rove...the buck stops with Bush).

Abbas has been Arafat's 2nd-in-Command since 1964. He is NOT a new face. The "power struggle" between him and Arafat has been a planned farce and subterfuge. He bears equal responsibility with Arafat for every single murder since the PLO's founding.

Yet here we witness the disgraceful display of Bush championing Abbas to the world. Israeli lamb to the slaughter. This trip is simply disgusting.

So?
Bush does not respect the national sovereignty of the US. He respects no immigration laws and cares not a whit for the national question for his own country. Why should he treat Israel differently than he does every other Western country?

Who is getting $10 Billion? (I suppose if you ad Israel, Egypt, and Jordan, but not state is getting that.)
As for Loan guarantees, these are not donations as they are repayed. At any rate, they should be stoppped. http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/921943/posts

"Just how far will Bush appease Arab terrorists?"

----

A smart person once told me: "Never mind what they say, watch what they do".

Look at Bush, he never once met with Arafat, while Clinton has been kissy-kissy with Arafat, and had him in the White House a dozen times or so. Also note that Bush didn't get involved in the road map until now, he let Sharon go and kill and capture the terrorists to his heart content, Bush didn't interfere, Bush didn't urge Israel to show restraint, as Clinton and the UN constantly did.

Bush cleaned up Iraq and will clean up Syria and Iran, Israel's major enemies.

I think Israel never had a better friend than Bush.

I think you are "misunderestimating" Bush.

EXCERPT:
Middle East Road Map – A Small Inset on US Postwar Atlas

DEBKAfile Special Analysis

What has led Israeli prime minister Ariel Sharon to fit unreservedly into America’s geo-strategic box for the postwar Middle East? What has President George W. Bush promised him for saying yes to the Middle East road map, a document that no one except its authors believes in? What role is assigned the Palestinians? And how much will it cost Israel?

Sharon was offered three main incentives:

First – America’s systematic disarmament of Israel’s most dangerous enemies has been built into the Bush master-plan – Iraq first; shortly, an attempt to dissolve Iran’s nuclear weapons option (see separate article on this page), followed by steps to eliminate Syria’s missile systems and weapons of mass destruction and the Hizballah’s military capabilities. In the long term, Washington will almost certainly aim at cutting short the development of Egyptian and Libyan N-bombs.

The United States is sweeping all these threats from its borders without Israel needing to deploy a single soldier or fire a single shot. For this saving of Israeli military life and limb, no words can do ample justice. Without any expenditure of its own military and economic resources, Israel may find itself in three or four years liberated from all its next-door enemies for the first time in its history.

Second – The prospect of Yasser Arafat’s eclipse on the international and Palestinian stage. The United States has acquired a new partner for the job of tightening the noose of isolation around the terror master’s neck – Saudi Arabia. (More about this below)

Third – Sharon has been assured by the Bush White House – though not publicly – that Washington will back him in resisting any attempt to include the return of the 1948 Palestinian refugees in a final-status accord. Washington also promises to go along with leaving the main Jewish settlement blocks in place on the West Bank.

I think your posts are dead on...... there's no 'compromising' when it comes to Bush's 'strategy' and words are just that - words.

Bush I asked Israel to refreain from involvement in the first Gulf war - for a reason. And, after being breifed on the USA plans to deal with Iraq and how much damage we intended to inflict on Iraq and virtually decimate their ability to attack Israel (and others in the region), they accepted the role of bystander.

Here, the Isralies are "hearing" Bush II once again, and recognizing a strategy that most seem not to even care to explore. The PA will hang themselves and the roadmap will die, but meanwhile we'll continue on with Syria and others to minimize threats to Israel - and Israel knows this. And this is why Sharron is taking the position he is.

And there's so much more - but you articulated it well. Thanks.

How can Bush promise that Israel will remain a Jewish state when there are people in the Israeli government (Shinui) who are determined to make Israel into a non-Jewish state?

Why is it that Bush does not remember what Cheney said on terrorists (not including the {PLO of course it seems):

"With such an enemy, no peace treaty is possible, no policy of containment or deterrent will prove effective - the only way to deal with this threat is to destroy it completely and utterly, and President Bush is absolutely determined to do just that."

Yes, if you don't count that there were no US flights over the western Iraq and US-supplied intel was soooooo crappy that Israel had to deploy SOF teams in that AO to track SCUD launch sites on that rough terrain.

The PA will hang themselves and the roadmap will die, but meanwhile we'll continue on with Syria and others to minimize threats to Israel - and Israel knows this.

By sending them promises of big real $s for their big phony promises. It's become already traditional.

And this is why Sharron is taking the position he is.

Who wouldn't under threats of cutting military aid, cancelling loan guarantees and of inspections to check whether US weapons aren't used against civilian areas.

there's no 'compromising' when it comes to Bush's 'strategy' and words are just that - words.

Words are the tools of diplomacy.

"A palestinain state, side-by-side, living in peace with Israel."

I'm afraid Bush actually believes what he's saying.

We already have one of those, the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.

I think they are planning to force feed this Road Map to Israel, Israel will refuse the right of return and all nations will converge on Israel.
