Frankly folks, this is something of a vanity.
As reported in the article above, the Amateur Trapshooting Association must relocate and one of the locations under serious consideration is my beloved Shelby County Indiana.
I'm sure there are trapshooters out there in Freeperville and any support you could muster would be greatly appreciated.
I can't stress enough how much this move would impact the local economy (think of the children!) and knowing local support for this kind of activity (read 1st amendment rights) the ATA would be a great fit in the community.
So, if you're a member of the ATA and are willing to have your voice heard on this issue, please support the move to Shelby County Indiana.
Heck, if you are an ATA member and a Freeper, and the ATA comes to town, I'll have you over for a BBQ! (this offer limited to the first 500 Freepers).

Where exactly is Shelby county? I'm not an ATA member, I shoot skeet instead, but I went to the Grand last year to have my gun serviced. Even if you don't shoot the place is fun to be at. I was surprised when I first saw how close the airport was to the lines. I especially like the fact that everyone shoots in the direction of the airport! I live near Cincinnati, about how long would the drive be?

Shelbyville is very close to Cincy.
Take Interstate 74 toward Indianapolis--oh, maybe 90 minutes.

Used to trapshoot some years ago. This is an interesting article. Thanks for the post.

Some Indy news you may be interested in.
By the way, is there an Indiana ping list?

Thanks for the assist.

I am quite interested in anything that would help the economy. I have a relative who teaches in the Shelby schools and I know that the town's economy could use a bit of a boost.
No, there isn't an Indiana ping list, as far as I know. We probably ought to make one, especially with the governor's race coming up, which should prove to be quite interesting.

Heck, if you are an ATA member and a Freeper, and the ATA comes to town, I'll have you over for a BBQ!I meet the requirements, and I like my steak rare.. :)
The Grand American having to move, is so heartbreaking for so many that attend. They have been in the same location for over 80 years.
The Cities of Vandalia, Dayton, and surrounding communites will feel the ecomonic impact. With Governor Taft's anti-gun sentiment, it is not surprising that he would let the event move out of Ohio.
I live in Northeast Ohio, and it is a long drive for me to Vandalia, so 90 mins more won't matter much.
I wish you luck, in enticing the ATA to move to Shelbyville. The membership is really against Ill. because of the gun laws.
The article you posted is on the Trapshooters.com discussion site
Check under the "Relocation thread".
Might be seeing you in 2006!

In order for the Grand and the Ohio State Shoot (in June)to be held,
a chain link fence had to be erected along the whole mile long trap field.
Security to keep trapshooters out or in??
I'm glad you made it to the Grand. It is something to see.

See if my Uncle Larry Gravestock is still on the books for winning the Grand American ? Not sure of the date as I was a pup when he did it. I was raised shooting around him , Britt Robinson and Bill Dunlop down in Amarillo Texas....
Stay Safe !

The ATA move would be a great asset to the area.
Considering the size of the Grand Nationals, I suspect that the economic impact would spill over into Indy.
That's a switch really; when the 500 is running, it's hard to find a hotel room here.

"I meet the requirements, and I like my steak rare"
Well, considering the potential response, I may need to cook burgers!
I checked out one of the relocation threads on the link you provided. They seem mostly positive about a move to Indiana.
A majority of ATA members on that thread seemed to support the move here citing reasons such as: pro gun state, amenities, owning the site (as opposed to the state owning the site), etc.

What about Springfield? They're always looking to "one-up" Shelbyville.

Doh!

New horse track may add a little to the mix!
To: sausageseller
Yup.
I'm not much of a gambler but I went to check out the track and it's very a very nice venue. It's also located within minutes of the proposed ATA site.
I'm curious, why would a sausage seller know so much about the location of a horse track?
What...uh...kind of sausage do you sell?
(jus kiddin' - you don't work at Klemms do you?)
To: MissTargets
Yep....my other uncle Richard , Larrys brother, was actually the "better" of the two but old Richard didn't stick with it. My Grandfather had the both of em shooting at age 12 or so and they won all kinds of junior titles at state and national levels. Then Larry made it a lifetime profession pretty much......
Thanks for looking that up for me......Stay Safe !
